During the school holidays Year 9 student, Nate Curran, attended the Zoos Victoria Careers Expo. Over 300 Year 9-12 students from all over Victoria attended the Expo to explore different careers in the world of wildlife, conservation, environment, and animal welfare. Nate’s group were presented to by the Senior Manager of Conservation Campaigns, an Animal Welfare Rescue Officer, a Pest Control Officer and the Nursery Supervisor.
What a great experience and well done to Nate for taking initiative to attend the Expo.
Recently the Year 8/9 Visual Communication Design class had an excursion to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery to work on some paper construction flowers with artist Eliza Jane Gilchrist. This was a great introduction to the creation of their cardboard models of an interior design in class. They look fabulous! The 8/9 Vis Com Class and Art electives have also made some inspirational posters that will be sent to Australian Olympians when they are in Paris. Good to see them getting into the Olympic spirit and supporting our Aussie athletes!
In Term 2, Year 8 Maths students studied the topic of chance and probability. Their term project involved students designing and building a carnival-style game.
Before the carnival day, the students had to calculate the theoretical probability of each of the outcomes of their game. The Maths Carnival was held in the last week of term. Students played each other's games, won prizes and gathered data in order to calculate the experimental probabilities of their games. A great project incorporating maths, creativity and fun!
Recently, Unit 4 Biology students travelled to Melbourne to attend laboratory workshops hosted by the Melbourne University School of BioSciences. Students completed practical laboratory activities in a tertiary education setting to support Outcomes 1 and 2 of Unit 4, VCE Biology.
The activities were:
• An investigation into response to an infectious disease outbreak using an ELISA test (Outcome 1)
• Analysis of evidence for genetic changes that effect populations and changes in species over time, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model (Outcome 2)
Students also got to experience some of the Orientation Week activities happening at the Parkville campus of Melbourne University.
Thank you to teacher, Ms. Victoria McCann, for organising and attending this excursion with the students. We are grateful to have many dedicated staff who go above and beyond to give St Brigid's College students excellent learning opportunities, beyond the classroom.
