A celebration of creativity
by Mr. James Taylor, Arts Domain Leader
The students here at Box Hill High School are incredibly talented, as was clearly seen during the 2024 Arts Week in week 2 of Term 3. During this week, the work of our Media, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts students was on full display.
The usual experience is that our students spend some weeks preparing creative expressions that are seen by their teachers and maybe the class. However, during Arts Week the work is seen by potentially hundreds of others.
As the Arts Domain Leader and one of the school photographers, I had the privilege of attending all of the Arts Week activities. Here is what I got to experience.
Monday lunchtime: a good number of students participated in a range of Drama roleplay activities in H1. Well done to Ms. Longden, Emma, Sabrina and Arabella for running this super-fun session.
Tuesday lunchtime: H2 was full to overflowing with students who had come to see a screening of Years 10 and 11 Media products. Thanks to Mr. Pelletier for organising this, and well done to all the clever students whose work was shown.
Also, on Tuesday the Visual Arts Exhibition opened. The back of the hall was set up as a temporary gallery to display the artworks by Years 7 to 11 Art, 3D Art, VCD, Photography and Design Tech students. As the images in the page show, there was a wide range of visual expressions. New to 2024 was the interactive and thought-provoking artworks produced by our Year 10 Art in Action students. These proved to be of great interest to those who visited the show.
Well done to all the students whose work was selected for display. If only we had a bigger space, even more students’ work would have been included.
My thanks to my fellow Visual Arts teachers for their hard work in getting the show up and down in such a short time: Ms. Nevard, Ms. Gyarmathy, Ms. Lockhart, Ms. Brewer, Ms. Bellemy and Mr. Davies.
Thursday lunchtime: H4 was full of students who had come to hear performances by our senior Music students. This proved to be a valuable experience for our Music students, in front of a supportive audience. Well done to every student who performed and thanks to Mr. Rogers, Mr. Williams and our hardworking instrument teachers.
Thursday from 3 pm until 7:00 pm: many families and friends visited the Visual Arts Exhibition in the hall. I would like to thank everyone for coming to see the show. We really value your support for the arts here at Box Hill.
To end the week: our Drama students again filled H4 for a round of Mafia Challenge, lead by the ever-engaging Mr. Wilkins.
The gallery of images attached to this page visually demonstrates some of the fun from the whole week.
We look forward to the VCE Exhibition later this year, when we get to showcase the talents of our Units 3 and 4 Art Making and Exhibiting, VCD and Media students.
Thanks to Ms. Ind and the senior leadership team for your support to the Visual and Performing Arts. Thanks also to the Visual Arts and Music captains: Asha, Coco, Nelini, Diwan, and Cameron. We really appreciate all your help this week and during the year so far.
Thanks again to my hardworking Arts team for all your efforts in the weeks leading up to, and including, Arts Week. Our students are privileged to have you as their teachers.
