Welcome Back Grade 4 Families!

 

How quickly this year is going! Term 3 already! We can’t wait to share all the exciting learning that will happen this term.

 

Reading

This term, students will continue to work in fluency pairs to improve their reading accuracy, speed, and expression. They will focus on:

  • Rereading for meaning
  • Self-questioning and pausing to think
  • Self-correcting and reviewing
  • Using knowledge of the genre

We will delve into text structures and features, covering both fiction and non-fiction, and their purposes and audiences. Our comprehension strategies will include:

  • Prediction and prior knowledge
  • Determining importance
  • Synthesising information

In Week 6, we will celebrate Book Week with the theme Reading is Magic.

 

Writing

Our weekly handwriting sessions will focus on:

  • Forming clearly-joined letters
  • Developing increased fluency and automaticity
  • Increasing typing speed using software

This term, we will explore the genre of entertainment through:

  • Writing poems (from different cultures)
  • Creating imaginary retellings and performances (including Indigenous narratives)
  • Crafting short historical narratives with images
  • Developing plays and performances from various cultures

 

Maths

In Term 3, our maths curriculum will focus on multiplication and division, as well as probability and mass. Students will practice skip counting by different intervals to recognize patterns, which will lay the foundation for understanding multiplication and division concepts. They will engage in hands-on activities to enhance their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Additionally, we will:

  • Tell time on analogue and digital clocks and read a calendar
  • Build fluency in counting, focusing on counting by 1s, 10s, 100s, 1000s, and 10,000s up to 100,000
  • Practice multiplication tables for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit will focus on Environmental Sustainability with the title Exploring Environmental Sustainability Across Communities! Students will learn about _by exploring the following key questions:

  • How does the environment support the lives of people and other living things?
  • How does the environment support the lives of people and other living things?
  • How do different views about the environment influence approaches to sustainability?
  • How and why do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People value their environment? 
  • How can people use places and environments more sustainably?

The Grade 4 Team

 

 

PE 

In Grade 4 PE classes, students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills while exploring more challenging games and sports. They’ll be refining their techniques and strategies, focusing on fair play and teamwork. Students will also continued to refine their skills whilst playing sports like badminton and volleyball. 

 

Japanese

This term in Japanese, the Grade 4 students are developing their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a mini unit on the theme of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Students will develop their vocabulary of 13 sports and 10 countries in Japanese. Students will also learn transport vocabulary and use this vocabulary in sentences. They will continue to learn new hiragana and consolidate previously learned hiragana, to support their reading and writing in Japanese. Students will learn about Tanabata (Star Festival) which is celebrated in July in Japan.

 

Visual Arts

This term students in Year 4 will explore modelling, using materials to create 3-dimensional pinch pot monsters. They will continue to study the work of famous artists as they discuss the materials and techniques used. These studies will assist them with the application of new ideas and designs when creating their own art. Students will reflect on the process taken to make their art as well as the completed product. They will continue to show courage and take risks when exploring new techniques and they will work safely in the art room. This term students will experience how exciting it is to share their artworks with their family and community at our well anticipated show.

 

Performing Arts

This Term in Performing Arts, Grade Three and Four students will be working in teams to explore narrative structure and character when using the dramatic convention on ‘Tableaux’. This form of Drama uses frozen images, with students using facial expression and body language to retell classic stories as well as begin to develop their own plots. Students will explore concepts of status and empathy when creating their own Tableaux performances and will build upon critical thinking skills when giving and receiving feedback with each other.
