CURRICULUM FOCUS
We are learning to calculate percentages.
VOCABULARY
Percentages: Percentages represent a fraction of 100, showing a part of a whole as a proportion.
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Calculating your shooting percentage.
What you will need: A basketball ring, ball, notepad and pen.
Before you start, layout your notepad like below:
Attempt | Shots In | % |
First Go | /15 | % |
Second Go | /15 | % |
Step 1: Take 15 shots from the foul line and record in your notepad how many you got in (in the first go/shots in section)
Step 2: Take another 15 shots from the foul line and record in your notepad how many you got in (in the second go/shots in section)
Step 3: Now that you have your data you need to calculate your shooting percentage.
Step 4: Using a calculator, simply type in the amount you got in and then divide that number by the total amount of shots. For example if you got 13 in you would type 13 divided by 15. The first two decimals are your percentage. Write these two digits in the % column. For example 13/15 = 0.86 so your percentage is 86%
Step 5: Analyse the data and identify:
- Which attempt was better?
- Can you think of a reason why this attempt was better>
Extension: Try this again for three days in a row and compare your percentages. Did you improve?
- If you don’t like basketball, try cricket. Record how many times you can hit the stumps bowling for 15 deliveries.
