Introducing Dr Lisa Damour

Introducing you to Dr Lisa Damour, an American Maggie Dent, who is known for dispensing practical advice backed by scientific research. Linking her recent publications (The Emotional Lives of Teenagers, Untangled and Under Pressure) is a reassuring throughline: “mental health is not about feeling good; it’s about having the appropriate feelings at various times and being able to manage those feelings effectively”.

Dr Damour posits that teens want and need to be connected to loving adults; that they sometimes need that connection at inconvenient times; that avoidance feeds anxiety; that direct and fair social boundaries can be negotiated and such like.

Peer Mediation

I really want to commend this current group of Year Eleven students who are participating in what is the third iteration of Peer Mediation Training at GSG. This student led conflict resolution programme is gaining traction here at GSG as it works to empower the leaders/mediators and the participants. Peer mediation fosters such skills and notions as self-responsibility for actions, mutual community member support, the notion that others matter, and self-regulation.

This course has its roots in a hybrid of IREX Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediator Toolkit and a Peer Mediation programme out of NSW Ed Dept. To explicate, IREX and the Foundation for Tolerance International [FTI] created the Youth Leadership for Peace Conflict Prevention Toolkit and Peer Mediation Toolkit with support from consultant and peer mediation experts. For more information about the Youth Leadership for Peace Project please visit: Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation Toolkit | IREX

The Year Eleven students who are currently participating in the training are Meg Furphy, Morgan Apostoles, Sophie Harris, Chloe Climie, Iris Miller, Chelsea Pearson and Mariella Somerscales. Legends!!
