Careers and Pathways

Sarah Gurney - Careers and Pathway Planning Advisor

Each year I find June officially becomes the time our Year 11 and 12 students really start to come out of the woodwork in terms of thinking about their future careers and pathways.

In the last two weeks I have met with and spoken with most of our Year 11 and 12 students, and it’s been great to see the variety of pathways they have in mind. From medicine, to construction, to physiotherapy, to teaching and more, our senior secondary students have some great careers in mind.

June also starts to become the time where universities and learning institutes ramp up their information and advertising to students, so it’s no wonder this has been on their mind.

This week we have had our first visit from the University of Tasmania to discuss the highly popular Schools Recommendation Program (SRP) which allows Year 12 students (if successful in their application) to be awarded early entry into UTAS based on their performance through Years 11 and 12.

A large majority of our Year 12s attended this session and were eager to find out how they can enter the program. Over the next four months, we will work with students on their applications and university preferences and hope to see all of our applicants receive an offer to one or more of their desired courses.

This week I also visited the Tertiary Information Service (TIS) event, which hosted several mainland universities that Year 11 and 12 students may be interested in. As our students are coming to realise, the application process for mainland universities differs from Tasmanian applications, so students are encouraged to come and have a chat if they are needing assistance with this.

The vendors from this event also stocked me with a haul of 2026 Course Guides and accommodation information from various universities – come and grab one if you are interested!
