Junior School House Mathematics

On Monday 19 May and Wednesday 21 May, the Year 3 - 6 students participated in the inaugural House Mathematics Competition. The students competed in four or five different mathematical challenges. They worked in teams and individually to earn points for their Houses.

Check the Clues was a team challenge where the students needed to follow the clues given to their team to discover the mystery number. Recalling key mathematical concepts helped them to succeed in this challenge. Number Hive saw the students compete against each other to be the first to get four in a row. They needed to call upon their knowledge of basic number facts to succeed in this challenge. KenKen was another team challenge where students needed to place numbers one to four (or five) so each number only appears in each row or column once. There was the added challenge of different sections of the square having mathematical rules to follow, also. The Speed Maths Challenge saw students calling upon their basic number facts to answer questions faster than the rest of their class to become the class champion. The Years 5 and 6 students also tackled Rectangulation, where they competed against a partner to avoid forming a rectangle with the R in it.

Now to the results:

  • Gibeon Warriors won Check the Clues.
  • Gibeon Warriors won Number Hive.
  • Zion Crusaders won KenKen.
  • Tabor Trojans won the Speed Maths Challenge.
  • Tabor Trojans won Rectangulation.

The overall winner of the event was… Gibeon Warriors! Followed by Tabor Trojans in 2nd and Zion Crusaders in 3rd.

I want to take the opportunity to thank the Year 3 - 6 teachers, Mrs Vicky Kirby-Beach and Mrs Lynne Taylor for their support of the event.
