Year 7 Oxley Retarding Basin Fieldwork and Year 10 Coastal Fieldwork Excursions
During the month of May, Geography students ventured beyond the four walls of the classroom, bringing to life the curriculum they study in class.
The Year 7 Geography classes spent an afternoon full of enthusiasm exploring, conducting field sketches, and testing the water quality of the three retarding basins located on the LMC property. Their focus was to gain an understanding of how we utilise water around the campus and to use the water testing data they collected to assess the health of each retarding basin.
Teachers handed out water testing strips, and everyone worked together to analyse the condition of the water. They looked at things like pH levels, the amount of nitrate and nitrite present, and the turbidity of the water. Together, they recorded the results and will pass them on to LMC’s Property Team so the school can improve the state of the water.

It was really cool to see the three retarding basins on campus. I loved testing the water and seeing the great condition it was in, thanks to the Maintenance Team. They do an amazing job!

Completing my first field research task for Geography was such an incredible experience. I really enjoyed exploring new corners of our school and working within its beautiful natural surroundings.

Year 10 Geography students spent an engaging day exploring, collecting data, and creating field sketches to study coastal processes, and management strategies at three sites within the Port Phillip Bay region: Sandringham Harbour, Hampton Beach, and Sandringham Beach. The aim was to develop an understanding of the importance of actively managing coastal areas and the challenges associated with different management approaches.
Hampton Beach was a wonderful environment to explore in person, rather than just learning about it in the classroom. We walked around the beach, sketching what we saw, such as groynes, waves, and the big, expensive yachts. My favourite part of the whole trip was the quality time I got to spend with my classmates.
