Visual Communication Design
On Monday 20th May our Year 11 and 12 Visual Communication Design (VCD) students had the exciting opportunity to visit the prestigious Top Designs exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. This annual event showcases exemplary work from VCE students across Victoria in a range of design and media subjects, including Visual Communication Design, Product Design and Technology, Theatre Studies, VET, and Media Studies.
Our VCD students explored an inspiring collection of folios and final presentations that demonstrated the complete design process across multiple fields: communication design, industrial design (objects), environmental design, and interactive experiences. The exhibition provided a valuable insight into how successful students document and develop ideas into highly resolved outcomes — a process that directly reflects our own VCE curriculum.
A highlight of the day was a special alumni speaker session, featuring three past VCD students from 2022 to 2024 who are now pursuing further education or careers in the design industry. They shared honest reflections, practical tips, and words of encouragement on navigating the VCD journey. This engaging conversation was moderated by Kathryn Hendy-Ekers, Curriculum Manager of Visual Arts and Media at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), who also provided an informative overview of what to expect in Units 3 and 4.
Following the exhibition, students enjoyed lunch in Melbourne Central before making their way to the RMIT Design Hub, where they attended a contemporary exhibition as part of Melbourne Design Week. This visits exposed students to professional-level design thinking and presentation techniques in a real-world setting.
The excursion left our students inspired, motivated, and creatively recharged as they returned to class ready to apply new insights into their current Unit 1 and Unit 3 design outcomes. We look forward to seeing how these experiences influence their future design solutions.
