Founder’s Day
Last Friday we celebrated Founder’s Day as a College community. The highlight for me is always when we come together to celebrate Mass as a community. It is a reminder of why we are here, what our purpose is and a roadmap of where we want to go as a College community.
We are truly thankful that Blessed Edmund Rice made it his mission to educate those less fortunate than himself. In 1802 Edmund started a boys’ school for those who were living in poverty. He started the Christian Brothers as a religious order which we now know to be EREA.
During the Mass, as a College community we pray for the Christian Brothers and are also given the opportunity to thank them for all their pioneering work in educating young people across Australia, and their mission remains strong at SPC. We are blessed that we had a few Christian Brothers who were able to celebrate Mass with us on the day: Br Brian Berg cfc, Br Bob Wallace cfc, Br Mark Cody cfc and Br John O’Shea cfc.
As someone who was educated by the Christian Brothers at Waverley College, it was special for me to be able to acknowledge my former Principal, Br Bob Wallace who has been involved in educating young men for over 60 years. He was Headmaster at both St Edmund’s College in Canberra and Waverley College and in 1987, he was awarded an OAM for his service to education.
When we think of SPC, we must be forever grateful to the Christian Brothers. As it is their legacy that binds us together, and the reason we exist is because they set about ensuring that young men had the opportunity to gain a liberating education.
