Foundation: Grade 1 Miss Emmett

It has been an exciting week in the F/1 classroom as our young learners took a big step forward in their writing journey! During our InitiaLit lessons, the students wrote their very first decodable captions and sentences. Using the sounds and words they have learned so far, they carefully constructed simple sentences they could both read and write independently. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they proudly shared their work with the class. This milestone marks a great achievement in their development as readers and writers.

In Maths, we have been exploring the concept of measurement, with a focus on length. The students had lots of fun comparing different stationery items from around the classroom such as pencils, glue sticks, and rulers. Working in pairs, they measured, compared, and then ranked the items from shortest to longest. Through hands-on activities and rich discussions, they are learning to use everyday language like “shorter than” and “longer than,” and are beginning to understand how we measure and order objects in our environment.

Mrs Brennan introduced a fun and engaging activity called Keepy Uppy to support our social and emotional learning. As a class, we worked together to keep a balloon in the air, focusing on teamwork, communication, and having fun. After the game, we gathered in a circle to reflect on how the activity made us feel. Students were encouraged to identify and articulate their emotions, using words like “excited,” “nervous,” “happy,”, “jealous” and “frustrated.” This simple but effective game helped students build emotional awareness and develop the language to express their feelings in a safe and supportive environment.

Grade 2: Miss Wooden

We have been doing a lot in Year 2 over the last two weeks! We have all been working hard, measuring various objects in the classroom in our Numeracy lessons. We have been learning about adding prefixes and suffixes to base words during our Spelling lessons. We have also been focusing on describing a character from ‘The Super Speedy Sloth’, ‘Pig the Pug’ and ‘The Truck Cats’.

Here are our favourite things:

Angus: I liked making the strength heart during a Resilience Project lesson.

Kynan: I liked colouring the cat from the Simultaneous Storytime book ‘The Truck Cat’.

Harlow: I like having sports with Mrs Brennan and being back at school after a holiday.

Indy: I liked having sport and playing ‘borrow, borrow’.

Lottie: I liked creating my strength heart and listening to the story ‘The Truck Cat.

Heidi: I liked writing the summary of the story ‘The Truck Cat.

Samuel: I like doing lots of different subjects and colouring.

Alex: I liked measuring the room during Mathematics.

Grade 3: Mrs Stock

What We’ve Been Up To in Class

We’ve had a fun and busy couple of weeks in the classroom!

In Math's, we’ve been learning all about Length. The students have been measuring and comparing objects using millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. They’ve loved getting hands-on and checking out the lengths of different things around the room.

We’ve also started our new class novel, Yirra and Her Deadly Dog Demon,  which has sparked some interesting discussions in class so far. In Literacy, we’ve begun looking at factual recounts and are revising the four types of sentences – statements, questions, commands and exclamations. We’ve also made a start on our cursive writing, and the kids are giving it a great go.

In Religion, we’ve been learning about the important events of Pentecost and the Sacraments of Initiation. Students have explored the story of Pentecost and how it marks the beginning of the Church. They’ve also been learning about Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—discussing how these sacraments welcome people into the Catholic faith and support them in their journey with God.

In Inquiry, we’ve been looking at what plants and animals are grown for food and fiber in Australia. It’s been really interesting to link what we’re learning to the products we use every day.

Lots of great learning happening in Grade 3!

Grade 4: Miss Dove & Mrs McKiernan

The Grade 4’s are settling in well to Term 2 and are enjoying all the special events that come with being a part of St. Patrick’s community. We have had a number of our boys represent our school in the Campaspe Soccer in Moama as well as other students both boys and girls, participate in the Campaspe Cross Country in Moama. We are very proud of both groups and are grateful for them to be given such wonderful opportunities to represent and compete for our school .

In Literacy, we are beginning our new novel called ‘Uncle Xbox.’ The story is about an upper primary school boy called Dusty, who lives with his single mum Kathy, and baby sister Mary, and the challenges he faces coping with family poverty, racist taunts and schoolyard bullying. However, some interesting possibilities open up in Dusty’s life, and he finds his place in the world through not only learning about his culture and connection to country, but by developing his own talents and interests.

Our writing focus for this novel is Factual Recount, so the students will learn all about how to develop an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion.

In Maths, we have been working on Length and Area. Students have been introduced to perimeter and area as measurable features of two-dimensional shapes. They have learnt about measuring length with formal metric units and about the features of two-dimensional shapes.

We have been celebrating the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit in Religious Education whereby the students have also identified Pentecost as a celebration of the Holy Spirit. Together we have explored and described the symbols within the Pentecost Story and the role of the Holy Spirit in the mission of the Church. In finishing up the unit, the students were required to identify how the Spirit guides them in their life. The following is some of the students’ responses:

Helps me to feel comfortable and be kind to others. – Liam

Holy Spirit helped us chose our new Pope. – Jaxon

I see the Holy Spirit when people donate to those in need. – Reegan

Holy Spirit is with us when we go to Mass. - Lani

Grade 5-6: Miss Rasmussen

This fortnight, our Grade 5/6 students have been refreshing their understanding of fractions. As part of our learning, we built fraction walls to help consolidate key concepts. These visual tools have supported students in recognising equivalent fractions—different fractions that represent the same amount—and developing their ability to convert between mixed and improper fractions.

In English, we recently concluded our first text for the term: Black Cockatoo. This powerful story provided a meaningful entry point into learning about Aboriginal culture, particularly the connection to land, totems, and the setting of Jaru country in the Kimberley. Using the main character, Mia, we’ve been constructing descriptive paragraphs using appositives and conjunctions. Students have worked on building strong paragraph structures with an introductory sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. It has been great to see their confidence and sentence-level writing continue to develop.

A highlight for our Year 6 students was attending the GRIP Leadership Conference in Shepparton, where they joined other young leaders from across the region. The conference gave students the chance to reflect on what makes a great leader and how they can use their strengths to positively influence others. Through engaging activities, role-plays, and discussions, they explored how leadership is not about having a badge or title, but about stepping up to serve others and lead by example.

We were also thrilled to have two teams represent our school at the Campaspe Lawn Bowls Tournament. It was a fantastic day of learning, growth, and friendly competition. Students showed great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day, with one of our teams progressing through to the next level—an outstanding achievement!
