The students in Year 5 have been working really hard. Last week we got to 60 class points, which was no mean feat! Grace said there was no way they'd make 60, but what gave them the points in the end was two days where EVERYONE completed their home reader....TWICE! This is the first two times this has happened this year! So, it was pretty special. The students have improved their stamina for the literacy we are getting through a lot more than we did at the start of the year. There are some hard concepts, but we are definitely learning lots. So, after getting to 60 points, we were rewarded with hot chips and a movie, which was a good way to end last week.
Each week we have had a new focus. This is where we try to focus in on something we want the students to improve in, or notice. Have they told you about this? Each student wrote how they dare to dream, I was so impressed with their responses. Certainly something to ask them about.
Thanks for all your support!!
Burton's Shopping for St. Vincent De Paul
We had a day out of the ordinary last Thursday. We visited Burton's to buy food for people in need. The students were very thoughtful with what they chose and I was really proud of how they conducted themselves. After Burton's we hopped on the bus to go to FCJ in Benalla to watch a concert. We saw many ex-students singing. Then we came home and had a play and the day was over!
Literacy
In Literacy, we’ve been exploring Waves, an anthology that shares the journeys of people who came to Australia by boat. Each page tells a different story—some heartbreaking, others hopeful. While this book may not be for everyone, we’ve found moments of connection and inspiration, especially as we created our own pages to add to the anthology. We've read stories of people escaping war, families crammed into boats with little chance of survival, and others filled with hope, excitement, and the joy of building a new life. Writing our own stories helped us understand the courage and resilience behind each journey.
Mathematics
We are whipping through Ochre Mathematics. We have blitzed probability, which had lots of hands-on learning and games, which the students enjoyed. We are finishing off looking at translating, rotating and reflecting shapes. Then we will move into time - which will be looking at clocks and 24-hour time.... wish me luck on this one!!
Inquiry
We’ve been looking at topics like mass production, farms, and the differences between whole and processed foods. We watched a few short videos that showed what sets whole and processed foods apart. Whole foods are basically foods in their natural state – colourful, full of nutrients and fibre, and generally much healthier. On the other hand, processed foods are usually packaged, tend to be white or brown, high in sugar, salt, and fat, and not as nutritious.
We also talked about how health experts recommend eating 2 pieces of fruit (or one big one) and 5 servings of veggies every day. I explained to the students that our taste buds actually change every 9 days – so just because you didn’t like something before doesn’t mean you won’t like it now! They were really keen and made a promise to start trying new foods again. We even had a food tasting session, which was a big hit! Quite a few students found new fruits and veggies they actually liked – super exciting. Hopefully, this gives you a bit of insight into what we’ve been up to and helps out at home too!
Religion
Our Religion has been studying the Sacraments - Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Anointing of the sick and Holy Orders. We have made some posters that summarise each and we are looking at the rituals for each.
