Inspired to Lead Formation Program - Rome

Elizabeth Whiting, Deputy Principal

During the Term 3 holidays, I was honoured to join the MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) Christian Pilgrimage in Italy, starting in Rome. This sacred journey deepened my understanding of what it means to be a pilgrim, a journey of seeking meaning, purpose, and truth, further deepening my understanding of our rich Catholic traditions and history.

Our journey commenced with a visit to the Catacombs along the Appian Way in Rome. These catacombs offered a glimpse into the early Christian community, serving as the resting place for martyrs, saints, and everyday individuals. We were led by a knowledgeable guide, explaining the significant and rich history of early Rome.

Our journey took us to many impressive basilicas, starting with St John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano). Dedicated to St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, it is the Cathedral of Rome and the most important of the four major basilicas in Rome. Known as the St John Lateran Archbasilica, it is considered the mother church of the Roman Catholic faithful. It was a humbling experience to be immersed in the rich history of the Catholic Church evident in these majestic buildings.

From there, we visited the stunning Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The Basilica of Saint Mary Major is one of four papal basilicas in Rome and the largest of the Marian churches (dedicated to the Virgin Mary) in the city, known for beautiful mosaics and grand architecture. I felt most blessed to visit this Basilica knowing the devotion we have as people of faith to Mary.

We also explored the St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City (Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano) where the iconic dome and the rich history of the papacy left a lasting impression on us. Each basilica offered a unique glimpse into the art, faith, and history of the Catholic Church, enriching our spiritual pilgrimage.
