Year 6 Persuasive Writing

Our Year 6 students have studied The War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Using the knowledge they have gained by reading the novel and researching The Great War, they were challenged to write a persuasive piece about the use of horses in war. The ReCreate homegroup has shared some of its opening paragraphs. Will they persuade you?

Should horses have been used in World War 1?

Among the deafening sounds of gunfire, soldiers screaming in agony, and the petrifying sights of red and orange flames bursting out of the sky a crucial question emerges:can we ignore the bravery of these loyal sidekicks that carried us on their backs and helped us dearly throughout the war? In the horrible hideous battlefield of World War 1, over 8 million horses helped humanity get through the traumatic events of World War 1. I am certain that horses were a very critical part of the war because of their capabilities in carrying heavy carts and their help to soldiers' mental health.

Should horses have been used in World War 1?

Between the silence and barbarity of this historic warfare, also comes the horses. The horses of WW1 presented a significant role but were not recognised for the advantage they had stirred for each side during the war. Their capability to make up for modern vehicles, their ability to aid in medicinal fields, and their warming reminder of family is something extraordinary. No man has the capability to win in war but one animal has the capability to win the friendship of them.

Why horses should have been used in WW1?

I strongly believe that animals have definitely played a crucial role during WW1. This is because having a very loyal, courageous, and brave animal, such as a horse in the great war would definitely benefit soldiers, as they would carry wounded soldiers as well as heavy artillery. This would make animals, such as horses, a great source of transport for soldiers in an era where military vehicles were not reliable, which made animals without a doubt very useful in the devastating trenches of the great war. These innocent horses also had to sacrifice their lives, which really shows how helpful they are, fighting for their life with a very puzzled mind and not knowing what is happening.

Should horses have been used in World War 1?

I firmly believe in the vast landscape of World War 1, among the sound of explosives and the sound of deadly shrapnel and gunfire, these courageous animals played a vital role and were deeply needed in the ominous sound of war. Horses were significant and they were great companions, they carried and pulled many carriages and were there for the soldiers when they needed them, in the tedious tasks and in the terrifying gunfire they were relentless and kept themselves and the soldiers going. Horses played a major part in the mayhem of war and were strong and powerful when the desolation appeared closer than ever, without a doubt we certainly required horses in World War 1.
