STEM

What a year it has been in STEM!

We have settled into our new building by investigating, designing, experimenting and building our way through the year.

Term 1

We explored the ideas of Healthy Communities by examining the role that STEM plays in keeping us safe and healthy. The Foundations began their learning journey by safely participating in experiments and investigations, while the Year 1 and 2 students used the Lego Robotics harvesters to create their own versions of food harvesters. In the senior school, the Year 3s and 4s designed solutions to help bees within our community, and the Year 5s and 6s tried alternative ways to cook food using solar ovens.

Term 2

In Term 2, the junior school examined changes on Earth and in the sky by finding out about the types of weather, and the effects of long and short term patterns. In Year 3 and 4 they explored the rotation of the Earth, Moon and Sun, and the effect is has on our planet, while the Year 5 and 6s delved further into our Solar System by creating rovers for other planets.

Term 3

Students became innovators by designing and creating toys or by adapting already existing ideas to create something new. We worked towards a Year 5 and 6 showcase at the Specialist fair by creating simple machine theme park rides with an artistic flair, allowing students to be creative problem solvers.

Term 4

We finished off the year by exploring the role that STEM plays in observing and informing changing populations. F-4 students examined and observed the changes that took place in a worm farm, and our senior students created their own investigations using the MicroBits to gather data.

It has been an exciting and eventful year in STEM, I look forward to seeing what 2025 brings!
