School Leaders

Being a school captain was an honour as it taught us to be confident and gave us the opportunity to build our public speaking skills. When we first got the role, we were a lot more nervous, but now that we have had this whole year, it has taught us to be engaged, clear and confident when we speak. Planning an assembly with others was honestly a blast as you become good friends with them. Being the 2024 school captains for Burwood East Primary School was an incredibly rewarding, yet demanding experience. We learned so much about leadership, teamwork, and the complexities of balancing the needs of a diverse student body. The responsibilities were significant, requiring us to juggle academic pressures with organising school events, representing students' voices, and working collaboratively with teachers and staff. It was a great opportunity to show our leadership skills and voice when presenting in front of the school.

Red House Leaders

Being a Red House captain was a wonderful opportunity that I enjoyed being a part of. Some jobs required coming to school early in the morning, and others required you to skip some of your favourite subjects. Being a captain, you are tasked to give your full dedication to create a positive impact on our school environment. Captains are expected to be role models for the next generation of Red House captains.

A Red House captain was an honour to take on the role. It’s not just about the badge, it’s about the dedication you have for this role and putting it first. Taking on this role meant being committed to wake up early and arrive at school to do your jobs as Red House captain. Whether it’s taking out the bins, putting up the flag, opening the gates or feeding the turtles, it was always a fun job to do even if it meant that you had to skip a session in class. Representing Red House at school athletics certainly was a fun and amazing end to my primary school year. This also gives junior school a chance to look up to their house captains.

Green House Leaders

It has been a pleasure serving as the school’s 2024 Green House Captains. During the year, we had a different job every term. We did a wide range of things, from feeding the turtles to hanging up the school flags at the front of the school, claiming first place in House Cross Country, to presenting the Mathletics Awards at assembly and representing our school at the ANZAC Day memorial at Box Hill Gardens. It has been a wonderful year helping the school out! We hope the next captains for the following years also enjoy their time as one of the promising Green House Captains. We wish good luck to next year’s captains!

Yellow House Leaders

Being the captain of a yellow house, I relate myself to the lively, but still nature our colour brings into being. Assisted by my team with enthusiasm and determined strength, I push for building a space where everyone feels they are a contributor worth their time and an igniter of new orders and systems. Here we develop through achievements, by solving head-on problems while making allies in teamwork who respect mutual support. The coat of arms is based on yellow where by its primary line represents the backbone of past friendships and also unforgettable experiences. I am glad to be the spokesperson of our house and look forward to leading us to victory, bringing into life the characteristics of joy and hope the yellow colour signifies!

One of my great experiences as a Yellow House captain was being able to represent the school by going to the ANZAC commemoration ceremony, which gave me a new perspective on the ANZAC, supporting me in gaining more knowledge and understanding.

With the many of my jobs and responsibilities, it has prepared me for high school since it has given me a stronger sense of responsibility, making me more prepared and on board for high school.

I thank the school for giving me this responsibility and knowledge, preparing me for my future journey! Things may come unexpectedly, but you should always have the strength to tackle it! Thank you for everything this school has done for me!

Blue House Leaders

As Blue House captain there are many responsibilities. Each term you have jobs, such as putting the bins in and out, putting the flag up, feeding the turtles and fish and opening and closing the gates. Our favourite job was feeding the turtles because you get to go inside the cage and even pat the turtles!

We also had to attend certain meetings to improve our teamwork and synergy and because of this the time of doing roles was always perfect and we were very happy with ourselves. We also had the opportunity to teach the other house captains how to do the jobs if they were struggling a little bit and this made us learn a little bit more about of the jobs and about the personality of our peers and improve friendships.

Sports Leaders

Being a sports captain has been a rewarding experience that has greatly shaped our character and leadership skills. A highlight for us was interacting with professional athlete Josh Simmonds, who shared valuable insights about dedication, resilience, and teamwork. These experiences taught us the importance of discipline and hard work. We are truly thankful for the lessons we've learned about resilience and friendships through sports. It has been a marvellous experience to work closely with our PE teacher, Rocky, and to work out the personalities of others and use the combined strengths of ours to create a better community and atmosphere for all.

Visual Art Leaders

Being the art captain was one of the most memorable experiences of Year 6. Being able to work alongside the art teacher Rochelle was a wonderful experience. The roles and responsibilities made us a proud Year 6 and speaking in front of the assembly every week made me boost my confidence in public speaking, standing in front of an overwhelming crowd. We have built countless friendships and memories with other captains we have collaborated with. We are truly grateful for the students that voted for us as the art captain and grow into the person we are today.

Performing Arts Leaders

2024 was an eventful year, with the new foundations, camps, the specialist fair, the colour run, and more! As music captain, we were responsible for anything related to music. Our role involved announcing the student of the week, organising part of the specialist fair, and helping Emma. What we enjoyed most about our job was being able to do, well, things related to music, as we have always loved music. Throughout our role, we were able to play many different instruments, such as piano, bass guitar, ukulele, drums, etc. We truly enjoyed being music captain, and we hope that the future music captains enjoy it as well.

We really enjoyed working with April although we didn't have any roles we helped plan many performances and presentations. We also had fun learning languages and other topics.

STEM Leaders

STEM is a subject that I found great interest in, so I naturally decided to present a speech. I put a lot of effort into that speech when I think about it. When I presented my speech, I was certain that I talked too fast or that I didn't say some words correctly, but I was fuelled by my spirit to have something on my college application. I did not want to seem boring to my future dream university. Even my teacher said that I put more effort into my STEM speech rather than my school captain's speech. Every week I have to stand up in front of the school at assembly. At first I hated it. I didn't want to fumble in front of everybody, but now it has taught me a lot about public speaking and how to find confidence. I wish the best of luck to the next year captains, and yes, you do get to miss out on a bit of class.

We loved working with Luke and helping him with various tasks, for example building him robots, presenting speeches and much more. I am really grateful for having the STEM captain role. I learned so much stuff from Luke in STEM. I am also really glad of getting the STEM academic award this year too. It was an amazing experience of being the STEM captain and hope the next years STEM captains also have a wonderful time.

Inquiry Leaders

Being an inquiry leader means you have the opportunity and the power to be able to share creative and new ideas. Inquiry leaders have the ability to elaborate and make the inquiry topic much more engaging. Our role shows pride for learning and inquiry, with approach various jobs with great responsibility. Roles such as, adding small details on the inquiry library pin board with photos and work that is related to the topic, interviewing students and teachers questions such as, “What does inquiry mean to you?” Sometimes we write buzz articles, work with teachers and take on board feedback from students. My favourite part of being an inquiry leader was when we went around the whole school, exploring different ideas and answers from different year levels because it helped me understand and to consider other students' perspectives to make the school a better place. Overall, I want to thank Leanne and Abbey for supporting and helping me with inquiry, and to everyone for making me enjoy this role.

Community Leaders

As community captains it was a fantastic opportunity to have this role and support our school, leading the Acknowledgement of Country at assembly and changing the community notice boards. We enthusiastically promoted and supported the Colour Run, making it an enjoyable day for students, staff and families. As part of our Specialist Fair we captured special memories and interviewed guests about their experiences in Visual Arts, STEM, Physical Education, Performing Arts and Languages.

A highlight was representing BEPS at the local ANZAC Day Memorial event, where we listened to the stories of the ANZACs and paid our respects to serving and past soldiers.

Eco Leaders

2024 eco captain was a wonderful job for me, and it has been a pleasure to take on this role. My favourite part of being the eco captain was announcing the winner of Trash Free Tuesday, because I am proud of myself for announcing the winners in front of my peers, classmates, teachers and families at assembly. Thank you to Ally for organising these amazing jobs for Sanuli and I. This also helped me transition from being a shy student to a confident student who isn't afraid to talk to strangers. Thank you.

Wellbeing Leaders

As my time as the Wellbeing Captain comes to an end, I just want to say how proud I am to have been part of such a wonderful school community. It’s been an absolute honour to support all of you, whether through a friendly chat, a smile, or just being there when someone needed help. I’ve learned so much about the importance of kindness, listening, and looking out for each other, and I hope I’ve been able to make a positive change. I’m so thankful to everyone who trusted me, and to all the teachers and friends who supported me along the way.

Remember, looking after your well-being is so important, and we can all make our school a happier place just by being kind and caring. I’ll always treasure the memories forever.

As a wellbeing captain, I say the school oath in assembly and organise the golden hat challenge. It also means that I get to organise or take part in fun wellbeing activities. I love being a wellbeing captain because the role and things you get to participate in are fun, and educational at the same time! Being a captain isn’t just all about the badge, but the responsibility it comes with and the role it gives you to help make the school a better place.
