Highlights in Year 6
Interschool Sport
Interschool sports were a blast! The Year 6s played numerous sports such as softball, netball, soccer, volleyball, cricket, tee ball, kickball, Danish rounders, ultimate frisbee, hot shots and end zone. Every Year 6 had a chance to pick and participate in any sport we wished and had a lot of fun. The Year 6s played against many talented schools in our district and we came upon many challenges, facing them with determination and courage. We had interschool sports almost every Friday and it was an exhausting yet great opportunity to get active and take a break from the classroom and work. Thanks to interschool sports, we learned the importance of sportsmanship and will continue to work on these skill sets skill sets in the future.
Local Community Walk
As part of our Inquiry Investigations topic 'Healthy Communities', the year 6 classes took a walk around our local community to identify the services we have, what they may be used for and how they impact our health. The students investigated whether these services are provided by local, state or federal governments, and how they might improve the health and wellbeing (physical and mental) status of our community. Our excursion went to Highbury Park, Tally Ho Shops and Tally Ho Park. The students were given an opportunity to explore some of the activities at these places, e.g. the playgrounds, walking tracks and ovals, and make comparisons between the two recreational spaces that belong to two different councils.
Lawry - I don’t think that there are enough water taps at Highbury Park. The one that they have is too far from the playground making it unsafe if a child goes there without parents watching.
Casta -I found out that we need more picnic tables at Tally Ho Park so families can spend more time there with their children and have a picnic, without bugs crawling on their food.
Ethan - I really like and will promote how much space and sporting activities there are at Tally Ho Park. Dogs can run around and exercise and kids can play a lot of sport.
Anshu - Highbury Park has a cool, futuristic playground and a lot of wildlife and trees like a jungle. It also has a big track for cross country. These things help with our wellbeing and encourage physical education.
Idaline - I noticed that there aren’t enough bins at both parks meaning that people are leaving their waste on the ground, which is a problem as it causes long term pollution.
Toolangi Rainforest
In Term 2 the Year 6 students went on a one-day expedition to the far region of Toolangi State Forest; to learn about the bushfire-prone lands of Victoria. Which was closely related to our Inquiry Investigations - 'Life on Land'.
Xinxin - I enjoyed the bus ride because we had lots of fun screaming, laughing and the boys chanting and singing on the bus.
As the Year 6 students eagerly arrived at the Toolangi State Forest, we spent the whole day working in the forest, and the Gould League Guides were teaching us about the forest, the bushfire and the animals in the forest. We walked through the beautiful forest on a chilly, but sunny day and learnt all about the different types of trees, such as: Messmate trees, Mountain Ash, Ferns and Fern Trees.
Holly - I enjoyed walking in the forest because the scenery was nice.
Leanne - I really enjoyed walking in the forest and looking at the beautiful sunshine in the sky.
We also learnt about Black Saturday, a tragedy that affected Victoria. It started in Kilmore East, when an electricity pole fell down and sent fire embers up to 2 kilometres away.
Meeya - I enjoyed the leeches because it was enjoyable, luckily I did not get bitten by one.
Alexander and Liam - I liked how the leeches did backflips on our arms.
MCG and VIS Excursion
Phillip Island Camp
Marshmallows were slowly crisping up near the campfire. Embers of light interspersed within the wilderness. The scent of smoke scattered throughout the camp. The students gathered around the fire and shared vivid memories of the events which occurred prior to the night.
The Phillip Island Adventure Resort was filled to the brim with excitement. The cabins were spacious and cosy. Our main accommodation was the Colonnades. Within each cabin there were three beds in one section and a separate room which consisted of two beds and an ensuite bathroom with a convenient shower.
The camp staff were kind and considerate regarding the students’ allergies and medications. The food was tailor-made to fit dietary requirements. The food was scrumptious and there was always enough for seconds and dessert.
Optimism and enthusiasm were to be seen during the activities. Every BEPS student put in their best effort with the activities. A prime example of this was when the students were doing the giant swing, almost every one of them challenged themselves and went to the top.
Surfing was exceedingly popular amongst the students. Everyone had fun and they were all trying their best to ride the waves. They learned heaps from the teachers and some even stood up on their surfboards.
Senan - I faced my fears and fear faced me when I went on the giant swing. The surfing was really amazing too... Maybe the real highlight was the friends we made along the way.
Elysa - At first I thought that surfing would be scary, but then I realised it was fun. I am proud of myself for learning to surf because this was my first time surfing.
Amelia - Camp was really fun and my favourite activities were the giant swing and surfing because in the giant swing I got to go really high and in surfing I stood up for a long time.
The lake sparkled as streaks of gold sunlight poured down, creating shimmering diamond reflections on the pristine water surface, the perfect setting for canoeing. Teams of two paddled around the lake, splashing each other and working together to turn left or right. With water safety a huge focus of our canoeing lesson, the students knew exactly what to do when their canoe capsized.
Our other activities included Flying Fox, Team Rescue, Low ropes and Boulder Wall, Archery. Overall, this camp was one of the greatest camps ever and a great experience for our last camp in Primary School.
