Highlights in Year 5

Year 5 2024

2024 has been an incredible year for our Year 5 students, filled with exciting learning adventures that have broadened their horizons and enriched their educational experience. From thrilling camps to engaging excursions and informative incursions, our students have embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. Their enthusiasm and curiosity have truly made this year memorable!

One of the highlights of the year was embarking on the journey to Alexandra Adventure Camp, where students had the chance to immerse themselves in nature and develop important life skills. Camp provided a unique environment for students to bond with their peers, learn about teamwork, and build resilience. Activities such as canoeing, laser tag, giant swing, archery and the flying fox challenged them physically and mentally, allowing them to step outside their comfort zones.

Our excursion to BBC Earth was an excellent excursion that sparked students' interest in the natural sciences and the world around us. This immersive experience allowed them to explore the wonders of wildlife and ecosystems from around the globe. Students engaged with interactive exhibits that showcased the diversity of life on Earth, from the depths of the oceans to the heights of the mountains. They learned about conservation efforts and the impact of climate change on our planet. This excursion ignited a passion for environmental science in many students, inspiring them to think critically about their role in protecting our planet for future generations.

In addition to our excursions, we were fortunate to have an incursion focused on First Nation Science. This program highlighted the rich knowledge and traditions of Indigenous cultures regarding the environment. Students learned about sustainable practices and the deep connection that Indigenous peoples have with the land. They participated in hands-on activities that illustrated traditional ecological knowledge, such as the importance of biodiversity. This experience not only educated students about different perspectives on nature, but also fostered respect and appreciation for Indigenous cultures.

Year 5 students also participated in the Stand Up Project, which aimed to promote kindness, empathy, and resilience among peers. Through engaging workshops and activities, students learned the importance of standing up against bullying and supporting one another. This project empowered them to create a positive school environment where everyone feels valued and safe.

Students had the opportunity to learn essential first aid skills. This incursion taught them how to respond in emergencies, providing them with the knowledge and confidence to help others in need. Learning about first aid not only equips students with practical skills, but also instills a sense of responsibility for their own well-being and that of their peers.

A visit from local police officers further enriched our students' understanding of community safety and law enforcement. Through engaging discussions, students learned about the role of police in their community and the importance of safety practices. This visit gave students a better understanding of the role of law enforcement and encouraged students to build positive relationships with local authorities.

Lastly, the Body Works incursion provided students with a fascinating look into human anatomy and health. They explored parts of the human body, learning about its systems and functions. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of biology and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, 2024 has been a year filled with remarkable learning adventures for our Year 5 students. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to engage in new experiences have made this year truly special. As they continue to explore and learn, we are excited to see how their learning journey will continue to shape their understanding of the world and inspire them to become responsible, informed citizens.
