Assistant Principal's Message (Teri)

2024 has been an amazing year with many things to celebrate! Working in partnership with students, families and staff, our school has continued to thrive.

One of our primary focuses at BEPS this year has been using mentor texts to engage students in exploring author’s craft, voice, sentence fluency, and ideas. These texts serve as powerful tools to inspire our budding writers to thoughtfully consider their choices when drafting imaginative, persuasive, and informative pieces.

One such mentor text is What Do You Do To Celebrate? by Ashleigh Barton, illustrated by Martina Heiduczek. This vibrant poetry book explores the various ways people around the world celebrate significant cultural events. Each page introduces a new individual, sharing a unique tradition or activity tied to a celebration. It’s a wonderful resource that encourages students to think about how they express their own experiences and ideas.

At our school, we come together to celebrate in our own special ways. One of those celebrations is our final assembly. Drawing on inspiration to create my own poem, I examined a few poems from the book closely to create possible scaffolds for writing a similar poem, for example:

The syllable pattern is 7, 8, 9, 8.

The rhyming pattern is A,A,B,B. (Meaning the first and second line rhyme and the 3rd and 4th line rhyme, but the rhyme is different in the 2 sets.)

Please see my poem below. As a family you may like to write your own poem about a significant celebration using the same scaffold.

End of Year Assembly Poem

Teachers gather, smiles are wide,

As students cheer, with joy and pride,

We mark the end of this great year,

With laughter, we give one last cheer!

Our yearbook is more than just a collection of memories—it's a celebration of our students' learning throughout 2024. It also captures their hopes, dreams, and aspirations. We encourage you to take the time to read through each entry with your family, marvelling at how our students Learn. Create. Inspire. at BEPS.

Lastly, thank you everyone for an amazing year. Our students all bring something unique and wonderful to this learning community and I cannot wait to see what 2025 will bring. I wish our Year 6 students all the best as they embark on the next stage of schooling. Remember to be yourself, be kind and welcome new and exciting opportunities.

Have a lovely break and stay safe,

Teri
