Highlights in Year 1
Term 1 - The Body Investigators Term 1
During Term 1, The Year 1 students had an exciting opportunity exploring the Body Investigators incursion, where they learned about how food, exercise, and sleep help keep their bodies healthy and strong.
They had so much fun dressing up as brain neurons, red and white blood cells, oxygen, and gastric juices. The highlight was entering an unhealthy body through the nose and acting out the roles of different body systems to see how they work together.
The students explored the importance of healthy eating, proper rest, and caring for their bodies in an engaging and interactive way, making it a memorable learning experience!
Term 2 - Excursion to Edendale Farm
In Term 2, students visited Edendale Community Environment Farm in Eltham as part of our Inquiry investigation, "Life on Land." During the visit, students explored the variety of native bees in our community and gained insights into how these bees work together to maintain a functioning hive.
They also had the opportunity to learn about the Indigenous plants and animals native to Eltham, as well as the devastating impact that the removal of these species can have on the ecosystem.
Throughout the trip, students deepened their understanding of the effects of human activity and the introduction of non-native species on the environment. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young learners to appreciate the importance of protecting "Life on Land."
Term 3 - 'Toys over Time' Incursion
In Term 3, the Year 1 students participated in an incursion as part of our Inquiry unit ‘Toys from the Past.’ Students were split into groups where each group was assigned an activity to complete within a set time. When the time was up, each group rotated to a new activity. Students gained insight into the motion and action of toys by tinkering with machines such as the Buzz Wire Game, Iron Filings Table, Magnet Art Boards Robots and Go Karts. They synergised to assemble toys and reassemble them according to the instructions provided.
Term 4 - Excursion to Melbourne Museum
In Term 4 the Year 1 students had an amazing adventure through the wonderful Melbourne Museum. During this visit the students made connections to our Term 4 Inquiry topic 'Changing Populations'. They also explored 3 exhibits including 'Forest Gallery', 'Melbourne Story' and 'First Peoples Gallery'. The excursion also allowed the students to gain more insight into how family dynamics, cultures and traditions have changed in Melbourne over time. This extended further by also highlighting the connections between our families and the families of Australia's First Peoples.
