Preview for Learning:
Literacy
This fortnight we explored two more Julia Donaldson texts, the ‘Smeds and the Smoos’ and ‘The Baddies’. Following the same predictable format of learning, students used the narrative hill to retell, identifying these two elements specifically, the problem and the response to the problem. Through this continual exposure to the narrative hill, students have begun to plan and draft their own narrative. This process has seen the development of some impressive settings, problems, responses to the problem and solutions. In Word Work students have been practising to read and spell two syllable words.
During sentence-level grammar sessions, grade ones have been learning how to complete sentences using conjunctions to expand sentences and have continued to utilise punctuation correctly. This knowledge will embed itself into their narrative pieces which we look forward to sharing.
Preview of learning:
We will continue on our adventure with Julia Donaldson and writing our narratives.
Numeracy
Recently, students have been looking at Australian Money, specifically coins. Students have been exploring the different coins through size, colour, and weight. Students have also looked at the value of coins and how many cents there are in a dollar.
Students have also explored 2D and 3D shapes, learning about different shapes names, sides, corners, and edges.
We have also started looking at data and representing data on graphs. Students have thought about questions they could collect data on and will continue this over the next few weeks.
Preview of learning:
Students will complete another week looking at Australian money and adding money. After that, students will revise previous topics such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Students will be revising until the end of term to ensure students are ready for Grade 2!
Inquiry
This fortnight in Inquiry, students learnt what natural resources were and how we use them. Students learnt how natural resources are not made by people and they are things you can find in nature - outside, underground, or even in the sky. Students sorted different materials into which natural resource they came from and had rich discussions about how we use these resources in our everyday lives.
We also learnt 3 important words - Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Students discussed ways that they could reduce items by using less of them. Some examples were, using 1 piece of paper towel to dry our hands, or conserving water by having quick showers. We also discussed how we can reuse items to be more sustainable. Students decided that they could reuse paper by making colourings into origami or paper planes or reuse shopping bags again. Students also learnt about recycling and the symbol used to recycle.
Preview of learning
In the coming weeks, students will be learning about composting. They will explore what composting means and how they can do it. They will also learn about pollution and the three different types of pollution.
Wellbeing
This fortnight students have explored a new topic in our RRRR curriculum - Gender and Identity. We have begun this topic with students comparing personal preferences through some fun discussions about different things they enjoy doing. This allowed us to find a range of things students have in common, but also a number of things that make us all different and unique.
Here are some examples of 1PR’s discoveries of our similarities and differences:
Things we have in common:
Sophie and Peyton - We both like the beach.
Ethan and James - We both like watching TV.
Indy and Zoe - We both like going camping.
Axel and Josh - We both like playing with Akedos.
Ruby, Olivia and Eli - We all like going on holidays.
Tanner and Thomas - We both like playing Call of Duty.
Enzo and Jackson - We both like soccer.
Jordan and Zach - We both like watching TV.
Things that make us different:
Sophie likes Minecraft, but Peyton likes gymnastics.
Ruby and Olivia play basketball, but Eli doesn’t play basketball.
Ayla loves netball, but Rhyan loves toucans.
Josh has 2 sisters, but Axel has 1 brother.
Thomas loves to play Akedos, but Tanner loves to play Fortnite.
Jackson likes Futsal, but Enzo likes outdoor soccer.
Jordan loves watching ‘Grizzly & The Lemmings’, but Zach loves watching ‘Transformers’.
Indy has 2 dogs, but Zoe has no pets.
James loves Akedos, but Ethan does not like Akedos.
We also talked about how what we all like to do does not depend on whether we are a boy or a girl. Students have been able to recognise the importance of respecting the individual differences and interests of their classmates.
Preview of learning:
Next week, we will be diving deeper into the concept of gender by considering the labels we might place on people just because they are a boy or a girl and why we should avoid doing this. eg. boys are strong and girls are pretty.
