World Teachers' Day
The College celebrated World Teachers’ Day last Friday. Created by UNESCO in 1994 and held annually in October, it celebrates teachers worldwide. The day aims to mobilise support for teachers and to ensure that they will continue to meet the needs of future generations.
The Student Representative Council organised a thank you card and a small gift for all our staff, whether they be teaching, support, administration, ground or boarding staff. In addition to this the Parents and Friends Committee, on behalf of all Saints parents, provided a delicious morning tea as a sign of appreciation to the staff. It is no secret that the key to a good school lies in the teachers who journey with their students each day. At Saints we have some of the best.
There is never a wrong time to do the right thing
It’s about making good decisions all the time. Doing the right thing, no matter the circumstances, becomes second nature and an essential part of our students’ moral compasses. For boys who are growing into men and experiencing so many strong influences in their lives, it can be challenging. How we support them in making good decisions is purposefully very clear.
Our behaviour management guidelines are written in plain language. Our teachers enforce high standards and expectations, not just in the classroom, but in every aspect of Saints life. When our boys do get it wrong, which isn’t often, we try to get them back on track with a minimum of fuss. Sometimes that means unpleasant consequences. The good news is that our boys generally respond positively to those.
Perhaps, most importantly, is the support we get from parents and caregivers regarding standards and expectations. It’s crucial for ingraining in our boys those good decision-making skills. When school and home work together, we can better guide the boys to make the right choices more often. A united front ensures a consistent message whether it’s about haircuts, respect, bullying or safe driving. This consistent, united approach from school and parents gives our boys the best chance to consistently make the right decisions.
While there’s never a wrong time to do the right thing, for our students it’s just as important to remember there’s also never a wrong time to start trying either. Encouraging their best involves a collaborative approach from their biggest supporters — us.
