Reflection
The struggles of life to find success
A boy watched a butterfly struggle to break out of its cocoon. Finally, the boy could bear to watch no more and, feeling sorry for the butterfly, he opened the cocoon and set the butterfly free. However, after spreading its wings and flying for only a few metres, the butterfly fell to the ground and died.
The boy had wanted to help the butterfly by making life easier but in fact, the butterfly needed the struggle to gain strength that would enable it to fly free and live.
Life can sometimes seem like a long struggle, especially when we are young. It is frightening to think of all the mistakes we could make as we strive to grow up into confident people, able to love our own lives.
However, without the struggle, without trying hard and making the effort, we can never grow.
Nor can we succeed, because success in everything is based on long hours of hard work.
As the boy and the butterfly found out, there are no short cuts. Yet in the struggles of life, we can find challenge, enjoyment and wisdom. In the end we shall value the prize more deeply if we have made the effort, fought the fight and achieved our goals.
As our young men prepare themselves for the final weeks of the 2024 school year, I hope they reflect on the year so far and continue to be the best version of themselves as they work towards completing their assessments through hard work. May all students embrace the College motto ‘fide et labore’ to truly experience success.

Are you prepared?
At our College assembly yesterday, I asked all students whether they are truly prepared for their classes. Have they arrived at school with all the necessary materials? Have they completed their homework and classwork to be ready for their lessons? Are they approaching each class with a mindset open to learning? As Years 5–10 gear up for their final assessments and Year 11 begins their first HSC assessment, it is essential that all students are ready to put forth their personal best.
Movember campaign progressing exceptionally well
The Movember campaign is progressing exceptionally well. Thank you to all those who have been very generous in donating to a very worthy cause. Below are some statistics relating to men’s health in particular to testicular cancer and prostate cancer.
Thank you to all the staff and Year 12 students who are growing a moustache in support of this great cause. This year I will also grow a moustache in support of a close friend and colleague who is fighting a courageous battle against the dreaded cancer.
Please continue to donate via myMo Space,
The link above is where you can donate to the St Pius X page – for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in your life.
The return of Mr Brannan in 2025
Recently, Mr Brannan informed me of his intention to return to St Pius X College in 2025. While he has thoroughly enjoyed his sabbatical at Mater Maria, he has missed being part of our College and is eager to rejoin the community he holds in such high regard. We look forward to welcoming him back in 2025.
Congratulations to some recent appointments
After an extensive recruitment process, the College is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Leaders of Learning. Mr S Di Sano has been appointed as Leader of Learning for Religious Education, and Ms D Emery has been appointed as Leader of Learning for English. Both Mr Di Sano and Ms Emery bring a wealth of experience to their respective faculties, and we look forward to the significant contributions they will make to the College's learning environment.
HSC Examinations successfully concluded
We are very pleased to be completing the HSC Examinations this Friday. I'm even more delighted to share that the Presiding Officer informed me this group of fine young gentlemen was as compliant, respectful, and appreciative as last year’s Year 12 class, whom he regarded as the best group of Year 12 students he has ever supervised.
P&F AGM
A final reminder of the P&F Association Annual General Meeting on Monday 11 November, commencing at 7:00 pm. Please join us at the AGM and consider being part of the P&F moving forward.
Cocurricular program
Please ensure all students are wearing the correct College sport and playing uniform. It was fantastic to see so many basketballers competing with enthusiasm and determination in their games last week. Just a reminder of the importance of accepting the referee’s decision and ensuring we demonstrate positive sportsmanship qualities. As we progress into Round 4, a reminder that all players must be wearing the correct uniform.
