Term 1 2025

Welcome to Prep 2025!
Term 1 is a busy term supporting the students adjusting to the routines and expectations of primary school. The first few weeks have a big social emotional learning (SEL) focus to build the students' awareness and understanding of their feelings, and we work on developing strategies they can use to help regulate themselves. We will introduce the Zones of Regulations and use resources such as Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR), Open Parachute and Smiling Minds to support their learning in this area. These strengths help the students to participate in learning, build connections and manage social situations with comfort and confidence!
For Literacy, we will start our Sounds Write program soon, introducing the sounds for the letters s, a, t, i, and m (unit 1). The students will be able to identify the symbols, say the sounds and read words as we begin to build words. In class, we will read a variety of fiction story books to encourage a love of reading amongst the students. Later in the Term, we will begin to send home Readers for the student to practice with at home (more information will be provided at a later date). In the meantime, having a daily afterschool or evening routine of reading with your child and talking about their favourite books and stories is an amazing way to support their development and encourage their love of Reading.
In Writing, the student will be practising writing their names, the letters of unit 1 and we will soon begin creating some 'About Me' books!
In Numeracy, we will following the Explicit Maths Program (EMP). Our Preps last year were part of a trail period for the program and were a key part in it's development. We're exciting to be able to run the program again this year and can't wait to see the growth in this year's cohort!
For Unit of Work this term our topic is 'All Are Welcome Here'. During this unit, they will learn about the diversity of our community of learners, and how inclusion and belonging are essential to us. They will develop vocabulary to describe their feelings, connections, our school and the process of learning. They will learn about the importance of shared values, and how no matter what makes us different, all are welcome here.
PICKUP ROUTINES
When picking up students at the end of the school day, classroom teachers will bring the students to the Prep Lineup area. Please ensure you are waiting to collect the students from this point and not from inside the hallway or at their classroom doors.
After collection, you are more than welcome to walk back through the halls so the students can share with you their work on display in the hallways.
If you're arriving at school near the final bell time, please still walk around the lineup area and not through the hall to ensure the corridors are safe.
The classroom teacher will wait with the students until they are collected. If you're running later than this, please call ahead to the office.
