What's Happening At Milgate!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Milgate Primary School would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land of the Wurundjeri People and we would like to pay our respects to the elders both past and present. Staff, students and the school community understand that we thrive, learn and live on Wurundjeri Country and we stand with all cultures united as one.

LEADERSHIP BADGE PRESENTATION

This week, we proudly presented our Student Leaders with their leadership badges for 2025. Each School Leader shared something they are excited about for the year ahead, setting a positive tone for what promises to be an action-packed year. We were honoured to have Brian Tyedin from the Rotary Club, recipient of the 2024 Manningham Citizen of the Year Award, join us to present the badges. Brian delivered an inspiring message, reminding students that you don’t have to be an expert to inspire others — just be willing to help people be better and do better. Following the presentation, our leaders enjoyed the annual Student Leader Celebration in the staff room, feasting on snacks and celebrating their achievements with families and friends. We look forward to seeing our Student Leaders thrive and make a meaningful impact across the school community.

PROJECT ROCKIT INCURSION

Building Respectful and Inclusive Communities

This week, students from Grade 3 to Year 6 participated in an engaging and impactful incursion with PROJECT ROCKIT, a program designed to empower young people to challenge bullying, build leadership skills, and foster positive social connections. Through hands-on activities, group discussions, and thought-provoking experiments, students explored strategies to address bullying both online and offline while developing their digital wellbeing.

The workshops highlighted the value of diversity and the importance of creating an inclusive school community where everyone feels they belong. Students left with practical tools to positively influence their peers, seek help when needed, and contribute to a respectful and supportive environment at school.

Thank you to PROJECT ROCKIT for delivering such a meaningful experience and to our students for their enthusiastic participation. We look forward to seeing these lessons in action as our school continues to grow as a socially inclusive and compassionate community.

PLANNING PYP UNITS OF INQUIRY WITH STUDENTS

In the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), we believe that learning is most meaningful when students are actively involved in shaping their own educational journey. Traditionally, teachers have been responsible for planning the curriculum, but more and more, we’re encouraging a collaborative approach where students play a key role in planning their units of inquiry. This method not only makes the learning process more engaging but also helps students feel more invested and responsible for their learning. This week, student representatives from each class from Year 2 to Year 6, have assisted in planning their upcoming Units of Inquiry. Our teachers have facilitated discussion in the classroom where they gather the perspectives of all the students and then a student representative presents the class's thoughts to the teachers in their planning session.

Why we involve students in planning?

When students help plan their learning, they benefit in several important ways:

  1. Increased Engagement: Students who have a say in what they learn are more likely to stay curious and motivated. When they’re able to choose topics or aspects that interest them, the learning becomes more personal and relevant.
  2. Ownership of Learning: By being part of the planning process, students take on more responsibility for their education. They learn to set goals, ask questions, and reflect on their progress, which helps them develop important skills for the future.
  3. Deeper Understanding: When students connect what they’re learning to their own experiences, they gain a stronger and more meaningful understanding of the concepts. This deeper connection leads to better retention and a more lasting impact on their learning.

Involving students in the planning of their units of inquiry is a powerful way to foster deeper engagement, responsibility, and a love for learning. It encourages them to take ownership of their education, explore their interests, and think critically. By working together with their teachers, students not only learn more effectively but also develop skills that will help them succeed beyond the classroom. This collaborative approach to learning supports the growth of confident, independent, and curious learners.
