Ylead

Recently, Oatlands Grade 6 student leaders participated in the Ylead program. This program is designed to help us build strong relationships with our peers and teachers and to learn new skills for our leadership roles this year.
We did lots of fun activities that tested our leadership skills. We were put into groups and took turns playing cops and robbers, practising our teamwork skills and fairness. Another thing we did was trying to crack a code on a mat with a grid. We took a step on the mat one by one, using our problem-solving skills to figure out the path. We each got our turn and all of the groups were in charge of the line. The team would tell the person on the grid what to do and where to go. This activity involved us having to work together and coordinate one at a time, but unfortunately, the first time our team failed. The second time, we listened to each other better and were able to succeed.
We loved learning about each other's personalities and about the Ylead workers but the best part was learning about the word HEART: an acronym that we can use in our leadership role. The letters are:
H is for Helpful,
E is for Energetic e.g. focus energy, positive energy, friendly energy
A is for being Aware of your strengths and Activating them,
R is for Resilient, even in the hardest of times to be strong mentally
T is for Team players because even if you're the best at whatever you're doing, you can't reach your full potential without your team.
All the captains are really thankful for the opportunity to work with new people and for the Ylead staff who taught us how to be good leaders and use our new skills to embrace the future.
