Year 6

Our biggest term of the year!

This term is a special one for our students, as it is their last term in primary school. As well as the academic foci for the term, we are also focusing on the preparation for secondary school and looking after the emotional and social wellbeing of students as we move

 closer to this milestone.

This term’s Inquiry/STEAM focus is all about biology. Students will be exploring the fascinating world of biology, with a focus on how animals adapt to survive in their unique habitats. They will learn to identify different types of adaptations (structural, behavioural, and physiological) and how these help animals thrive in often challenging environments. Students will also be introduced to using scientific names to describe animals and their habitats, deepening their understanding of the language scientists use to communicate. This will spark great discussions about the incredible diversity of life and the importance of adaptations for survival.

In Reader's Workshop, students will be again partaking in both a class novel study and their own book clubs. This is to assist with the transition to high school and having m

ultiple texts being learnt at the same time. After the incredible response to 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, we are hoping that next term's class novel will be just as big of a hit!

In Writer's Workshop our students will see the completion of their Graduation Albums and will be eagerly waiting for them to be printed and returned. Students will be writing narratives and will conclude the year by writing and illustrating a picture story book for their Foundation buddy as an end of year gift.

In Maths, Year 6 students will be exploring a range of mathematical patterns and rules. They will investigate geometric designs and number patterns, learning how to describe, predict, and write rules that explain how these patterns grow. Students will also practise solving equations with brackets and mixed operations, using their knowledge of number properties. As part of their learning, they will design simple algorithms to generate sets of numbers and uncover new patterns. The focus will be on recognising, applying, and explaining the rules that make patterns work.
