Year 5

Welcome Back!

Term 3 Recap

For the past few weeks we have been working on poems to submit to a program called “Poem forest”. It’s where each time a person submits a poem, a tree gets planted. It’s a kind and creative way to help the environment and save habitats. Each person has been working on their poem and collaging their poems to make theirs stand out. Each person's poem has their own different design of patterns and shapes. Everyone has worked really hard on these poems and made them look fantastic. I wrote a poem called “Trees and Leaves”. My favourite lines are:

In the fall my leaves turn bright,

Red, orange and yellow so outstanding in the light.

The Year 5 students are creating poems about nature and submitting them to the Poem Forest competition, with the theme being “understory”. For every poem entered, one tree is planted. Here is an excerpt from my poem called The Inferno:

Flames leaped tree to tree,

Red hot rage burning free.

This term the Year 5 students have learnt about poetry in Writing and Reading. In the poetry unit, we have learnt rhyming patterns and analysed different poems.

A line from my poem, The Rainbow Lorikeet, is:

Fearless feathered confetti

Term 4: Inquiry, Literacy & Numeracy

We have a big final term of learning coming up with the Year 5 students preparing to enter their final year of primary education.

Through our main mentor text for Term 4, Holes by Louis Sachar, students will further develop essential comprehension skills such as inferring, making connections, building word knowledge and asking questions. During Writing lessons, students will have numerous opportunities to pursue their own writing interests through independent writing choice, and hone the skills they have learned across the year. Particular areas of focus for all students’ writing skills will include punctuation, improving sentence and paragraph structure and word choice.

In Mathematics this term, our Grade 5 students are exploring four key areas: Patterns and Algebra, Mass, Capacity, and Location & Transformation. They are discovering how to recognise and create number patterns, identify factors and multiples, and solve simple algebra problems using letters to represent numbers. These skills help students understand the relationships between numbers and prepare them for more complex problem-solving.

Students are also developing their measurement skills. They are learning to estimate, measure and compare the mass of different objects using grams, kilograms and tonnes, and to estimate and measure the capacity of containers in millilitres and litres. These activities help them see how maths applies to everyday life, such as in cooking, shopping and science experiments.

Finally, in Location and Transformation, students are using grid references to find and describe places on maps and exploring how shapes can be flipped, turned and slid. They’re also identifying symmetry and combining transformations to create their own designs. By the end of the unit, students will have a stronger understanding of number patterns, measurement and spatial reasoning, and will be ready to apply these skills in real-world contexts.

In Science this term, our Grade 5 students are diving into biology. They’re exploring how living things are structured, how they grow and change, and how they interact with their environment. Students are investigating the features of plants and animals, learning about life cycles, and examining the adaptations that help organisms survive in different habitats.

R U OK? Day

On the 11th of September, we celebrated R U OK? Day. Everyone gathered on the oval to share food, and it was a wonderful time together – even parents joined in! The day was about more than just food though; it was a reminder to check in on others. If you notice someone looking down or not having a great day, take the time to ask if they’re okay. Remember, don’t rush the conversation – really listen and show you care.

Athletics Day

On the 15th of September, the Year 4s, 5s and 6s represented our school at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve. The sporting events included shot put, discus, a variety of running races such as the 100-metre sprint, 800 metres, and the relay. We felt very lucky to have the opportunity to represent our school and had an absolute blast, enjoying every moment of the day. Everyone who competed did an excellent job, showing great effort and sportsmanship. A big thank you to Mr Penny and to everyone who helped make our Athletics Day such a success.
