STATE CHAMPIONS!!!
Congratulations to our Girls Hockey team who have made history by winning the SSV Primary Girls State Hockey Final in Melbourne late last term. This is a brilliant accomplishment, and one the whole school community is extremely proud of.
As expected, the standard of hockey at the tournament was excellent and our girls were fantastic in all of their games. They were undefeated in their round robin games, with convincing wins against Hamilton & Alexandra College, Ashley Park PS and Cathedral College (Wangaratta). This set up a final against Wembley PS. Despite conceding the first goal, our girls rallied well to score the next two. The team displayed outstanding skill, determination and teamwork to hold on to this advantage until the final whistle. The scenes after the game were electric with emotion and celebration as the girls soaked in the gravity of their remarkable achievement.
I would like to commend all of the players for the way they conducted themselves throughout the entire journey – from Division through to State level. Given that most of the girls do not usually play competitive hockey, this is a brilliant achievement – and one they should be very proud of. I would sincerely like to thank Narelle Dalley for coaching the girls and preparing them so well for each tournament. The girls have certainly learnt a lot in a short period of time. I would also like to thank the family members who have supported the girls every step of the way.
Loddon Mallee Regional Athletics
Congratulations to all of our students who represented the school at the Loddon Mallee Regional Athletics on Monday. This competition was very strong and featured the best athletes from Central and Northern Victoria.
In what is an outstanding result for our school, all of our athletes finished in the top 5 in their respective events and 2 students have now progressed to the State Athletics final at the Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on the 5th of November.
Max H had a particularly outstanding day. Not only did he win the 11 Years Boys 200m event, he also came 2nd in the hurdles. Awesome effort Max! Sonny R also performed brilliantly, winning the 10 Years Boys 200m in a superb run. Fantastic effort Sonny! Both boys will progress to the State Championships in these events.
Our 10 Years Boys 4 x 100m Relay team ran brilliantly to finish 3rd overall. Although they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the State Championships, a podium finish at a Regional Championships is a fantastic achievement and they should be very proud of their achievements. This team included, Sonny R, Lenny F, James P and Flynn S.
In other results, Delainey G finished 4th in the 11 Years Girls triple jump and Louis F finished 5th in the 10 Years Boys discus. Our 10 Years Girls 4 x 100m Relay team came 2nd in their heat and finished 4th overall. This team included Pepper G, Grace F, Violet H and Remi M.
I would like to congratulate all of these students on their achievements, and for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day. I would also like to thank Ms Rodda for her assistance with supervising/organising the students on the day.
Auslan News
Welcome to Term 4 of Auslan!
All classes have started with some revision of their Term 3 topics: Prep ~ School Signs,
G1-2 ~ Seasons and Clothing, G3-4 ~ Clothing and Weather (in particular Natural Disasters), and G5-6 ~ Sport Signs.
Grade Preps have begun a new focus on learning the Auslan Alphabet A-Z, to be able to fingerspell their names, family and friend’s names, and will be learning to introduce themselves by signing: “Hello, my name what? [Fingerspell Name].” Prep students are encouraged to practise their Fingerspelling at home if they wish, and there is a Fingerspelling Alphabet Mat attached at the bottom of this news item.
G1-6s are revising the components of HOLM + NMF (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement + Non-Manual Functions) which are important to the grammatical structure of Auslan, being a visual-gestural language. See if your child/ren can tell you what any of the letters stand for and what each letter means. These classes are also learning some new Handshapes that are used to make signs in Auslan. Learning the various Handshapes in Auslan, helps us to sign more accurately.
G1-2s are learning Handshapes from Set 3: Middle/Feel, Bent Two/Kneel, Plane/Maybe, Okay, Three and Letter M/Mother.
G3-6s are learning Handshapes from Set 5: Open Hand Letter K/Perth, Cup, Round, Round/Forget, Flat Round/Eat, Flat Okay/Thread, and Thick.
G5-6s have also been learning about common sentence structures used in Auslan to support their understanding of the arrangement of signs in Auslan. The two common sentence structures in Auslan are:
Topic – Comment: School camp, we went to Melbourne.
Time – Topic – Comment: Yesterday, movie, I watched.
G5-6 students have learned that although these are common sentence structures used in Auslan, the language is much more flexible than English, so word order can vary and the sentence can still be understood by a Deaf person.
Enjoy these fun photos from the G1-4 classes at the end of Term 3 and the start of this term, as students practised the signs for Clothing in the Dress-Up games/activities:
