Year 11 Students Inspired by Deakin University Excursion
On Tuesday, 19 August, our Year 11 students had the opportunity to step into the world of higher education during an engaging and insightful excursion to Deakin University's Burwood campus. The day was designed to help students begin visualising their future beyond secondary school—and it certainly delivered. We are grateful for the staff who made this excursion viable as it provided so much learning beyond the classroom.
🎤 Real Stories from Real Students
One of the highlights of the day was a panel discussion featuring current Deakin students from a range of study areas. Each panellist shared their personal journey to university, offering honest reflections on the transition from high school, the challenges of academic life, the rewards of pursuing their passions as well as making the most of the variety of support services and social activities the University has to offer.
Parents will be pleased to know that the panel emphasised not only the importance of the course chosen, but the value of getting involved in campus life. From student clubs and leadership programs, volunteering and internships, these activities were described as essential for building confidence, making connections, and enhancing career readiness.
🚶♂️ A Guided Tour Through Campus Life
Students finished their visit with a guided tour of the campus led by current Deakin students. Our students saw modern lecture theatres, collaborative learning spaces and vibrant student hubs. The tour offered a firsthand look at the facilities and atmosphere that define Deakin’s learning environment. For many students, it was their first time on a university campus, and the experience sparked curiosity and excitement about what lies ahead.
💬 What Students Took Away
The excursion gave students a clearer understanding of what university life entails—academically, socially, and personally. It helped demystify the idea of tertiary study and encouraged students to start thinking about their own goals and pathways.
Many students left feeling inspired, more informed, and excited about the possibilities ahead. This excursion was a meaningful step in helping our students make confident and well-informed decisions about their future.
