Book In A Day

One hour to go! Jamie is that chapter edited yet? Olivia, have you finished the back cover? Who’s doing the blurb?

Over the past two weeks 8 students have participated in the SIS Book in a Day Competition: six authors - Audrey L from Year 7, Alyna J from Year 8, Ava G and Jamie B from Year 9 and Tessa D and Renae S from Year 10 and two illustrators - Masa B from Year 9 and Olivia C from Year 10.

The first day was held at St. John Paul College - a workshop where students were inspired by published authors and illustrators including Wendy Orr, the author of Nim’s Island. The importance of creating interesting characters was explored and how to express these in both writing and drawing.

Day Two, held at St John’s Regional College was writing day! The students worked so very well together and produces a fantastic 6-chapter novella of nearly 6000 words that was creative and cohesive. Were there some interesting characters? Yes indeed - an elite ice skater, a janitor and the most evil lizard to ever be created?

A big thanks to Ava G who took on the role of editor and made sure the team had uploaded the book by the 5pm deadline with 3 minutes to spare!

Well done team! The books will now be judged by students from each participating school. The top 4 will be judged by an editor from Scholastic Publishing. Results will be announced on Thursday 16 October at a special Presentation Day at Cornish College.

Go Nazareth!

NAZ at the Tournament of Minds 2025

On Saturday 16 August, students represented Nazareth College in the Tournament of Minds competition.

Tournament of Minds (TOM) is an international program designed to give participants the opportunity to participate in creative activities involving stimulating open-ended challenges, which demand experimentation and reward divergent thinking. TOM promotes learning and developing as an individual within a team structure.

Students in teams of 5,6 or 7 provide a solution to a Long-term challenge in the form of a 10-minute performance. They also participate in the spontaneous challenge, which happens on the day.

Our Year 8 students worked well together during the lead up sessions creating a play and script themselves to address the challenge. Then practicing and performing on the day.

Well done!

Year 9 Visual Communication Design

Students in Year 9 Visual Communication Design have been learning about how to translate 3-Dimensional drawings into 2-Dimensional line drawings called Third Angle Orthogonal Drawings.

This drawing method details the different views of a 3-Dimensional object without any manipulations of perspective, and it is widely used in engineering and manufacturing.

The students have experienced and developed unique skills, such as line styles, dimensioning, and labelling of views, to communicate various details for their drawings which align with Australian Standards.

Please take a look at the great work produced by the students below.

International Students Take on the 1000 Steps Kokoda Trail

On a crisp morning, 18 of our international students set out to tackle the famous 1000 Steps Kokoda Trail. For many, it was their very first time attempting this iconic hike, known for its steep incline and challenging stair climb.

While the trail certainly tested everyone’s endurance, the students showed great resilience and determination. Though many found it tough along the way, every student made it to the top—a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of teamwork and perseverance.

The hike was not only a physical challenge but also a valuable opportunity to experience a piece of Melbourne’s history and natural beauty.

A big thank you goes to the staff who supported the students on this adventure: Mr Chan, Mr Hermon and Ms Ho.
