Grade 5/6 News

Hi Wimba Families,

We can’t believe it’s already Week 8! A highlight for many in our cohort has definitely been participating in the Colour Run. We also had a group of dedicated students who practised regularly and performed at our recent assembly. In the classroom, students have continued to put in great effort across all learning areas. Have a read below!

Morphology

In the past few weeks, we have been consolidating our learning and exploring the prefix contra-/counter- and the suffix -ance and their meanings. Students have been analysing words containing these affixes and identifying the base word to determine the meaning. They have also been spelling, reading, and using these words in sentences throughout the week. Feel free to play Pictionary or Taboo with your children to help review their vocabulary! We’ve added the word lists below for you.

Writing

In Writing, students have been publishing their innovative texts based on our modelled text ‘Ice Forest’. They have done a fantastic job using a range of writing tools, such as building tension, using similes and metaphors, and showing how characters react to the setting. Have a read of some of their fantastic writing! Looking ahead, students will begin writing information texts.

Maths

In Maths, the Year 5s have been learning about Chance, Money, and Decimals. “Money makes the world go round," as they say! The students have been focusing on key concepts like budgeting and have enjoyed applying their mathematical skills to real-world problems. This has emphasised the importance of understanding vocabulary, interpreting questions accurately, and checking the reasonableness of their answers.

The Year 6s have been learning about Percentages and Cartesian planes and are now beginning to explore 3D objects.

Literature

The students have completed a thorough analysis of Jackie French’s texts, exploring imagery, personification, and themes across the three books studied. This has prompted rich classroom discussions around the theme of human connection. We will now begin building our knowledge of nautical terms and pirates as we start reading Treasure Island.
