Grade 3 News

Dear Year 3 Parents/Guardians,
The Year 3 students are having a fun last term and are still working hard!
Learning Focuses
Morphology
As part of our daily English sessions, we have continued to learn about more prefixes and suffixes. In the last few weeks, we have learnt about:
- Suffix -less which means without e.g. motionless
- Prefix in- which means not or opposite e.g. informal
Prefix mis- which means badly or incorrectly e.g. misbehave
Grammar & Syntax
We have continued to learn about editing sentences in past, present and future tense, using commas to separate items in a list and using apostrophes for connections.
Writing
We have continued our portal tale unit that is focusing on introducing and describing a setting. The students have learnt the example text ‘Rainbow Road’ and the four tools that they will practise using in their own story.
The tools they have learnt are:
- Choose a name that suggests something about the setting e.g. ‘The Cursed Mansion’
- Select the time of day and weather to create the desired effect e.g. ‘One gloomy morning…’
- Bring the setting to life by using carefully chosen verbs and adverbs e.g. ‘The waterfall splashed gently into the river.’
Use the rule of 3 to describe the setting e.g. ‘In Santa’s workshop were hundreds of tiny elves, freshly baked cookies and colourful stockings.’
Knowledge and Literature
We recently finished our unit on Ancient Rome and how their daily lives were similar and different to that of the First Australians and the Vikings.
We are now moving into a Literature unit titled ‘King of the Polar Bears’ where the students will be learning about using adverbial phrases. This is where we could describe a character moving ‘at the pace of a snail’ instead of just ‘slowly’.
Maths
In Maths, we recently finished our multiplication and division unit. We finished by learning how to solve worded problems and how to identify if we solve it by multiplying or dividing.
We have now moved into chance where the students are learning the language used to describe the likelihood of an event happening e.g. impossible, unlikely, likely and certain. They will conduct chance experiments to investigate the way that what we predict doesn’t necessarily happen.
We have also started learning about fractions. Students have learnt that the top of the fraction is the called the numerator and the bottom number in the fraction is called a denominator, we also learnt how we can represent these when given a fraction
SEL
This term we are working on Topic 7: Gender norms and stereotypes, where we are unpacking that both boys and girls can do things. For example, a boy can do dancing and a girl can play cricket.
Reminders
All school library books need to be returned so that the work can begin to prepare it for the start of next year. If your child has a school library at home, please make sure that they return it this week.
Students need to bring their satchel and diary every day. This helps with organisation, tracking reading progress, and communication between home and school. Nightly reading is an important routine—please encourage at least 10 minutes per night and record it in diaries. Students can also use Little Learners for extra practice. Please continue checking Compass regularly for updates, including the release of CATS (Common Assessment Tasks). There are still two CATs to be released this term.
