Grade 1 News

Dear Year 1 Families,
English
In English, we have been continuing to learn about alternative spelling patterns. This last fortnight the Grade ones have been learning about the long ‘i’ sound. Students have been learning about the rules when using the long ‘i’ sound. The alternative spellings we have been learning are ‘y’ making the long /i/ sound and i by itself.
Talk for Writing
Our students have continued to be engaged in learning about ways we can add more information to our texts using adding words (also, additionally) and generalisers (some, most). Students have loved having a go at writing information reports on a fictional characters and animals.
Core Knowledge / Literature
Students have been learning about ‘Changing families’. This unit has introduced students to a variety of structures of families, the definition of family and what it means to be part of one. Students then wrote an information report on their family.
Maths
We have been working on numbers to 120. Students have been developing their understanding of place value to the 100s, we have been learning to order numbers, from smallest to largest and vice versa. Students have been continuing number patterns and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
