Physical Education Wrap Up for 2025

Interschool Sport Success
It has been a big year for PPS students participating in interschool sports. We have attended more divisional and regional level finals competitions that in previous years in various sports. Congratulations to all these students. Recently our boys and girls cricket teams attended the Vic State Cricket Finals and had a great experience.
Our current Grade 4 and 5 students selected and attended sports trials for next year. Final teams will be confirmed in the first week back at school next year. We look forward to a big 2026!
Swimming Trials 2026
Recently students were given the choice to nominate themselves for swim trials for 2026. They were asked if they were able to swim 50m in either freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and/or fly. During Term 4, students attended swimming lessons where stronger swimmers were noted, and these students will get preference. However, we encourage all students who wish to give it a go to nominate themselves. I would suggest that over the summer you give your child the opportunity to practise swimming over the 50m distance even if it is building more distance each time. Swimming skills and participants are decrease over recent years, so we do want to give our students every chance to build confidence and have success.
Swimming trial participants will be confirmed in the first week back at school with trials being held on the 10th of February 2026 at La Trobe Swimming Complex. If you need any advice or have any questions, please reach out.
Jump Rope for Heart
What a success it has been this year for our students getting involved with Jump Rope for Heart in either just being more physically active and/or fundraising. It is with great privilege to say that as a school we raised a total of $15,143 for the Heart Foundation and making Preston Primary School the 17th most fundraised school in Australia. A big thank you to all the families helping their children raise these funds. Our students also skipped for a massive total of 200 hours which is amazing, helping them stay healthy and keeping physically active. As part of the process, instead of a Jump Off Day, students will have a Jump Off session during the last week of school where their certificates will be acknowledged and prizes will be handed out to them. Congratulations to these students who were the top five fundraisers of the year:
William L (1AA) – $1554.12
Ioan S (5AB) – $603.62
Seren S (3AD) – $603.55
Lilah B (Prep AC) – $577.41
Rozi Mc (2AD) - $525.41
Run Club
Well done to all students who attended Run Club throughout 2025. It is amazing to see the consistency from many students, attending regularly and building in some great routines setting up their day/week. It was also great to see new faces running laps or just walking and talking, making up valuable minutes of their daily physical activity time. Student who ran the most laps throughout Term 4 will receive their certificates in class during the last week of school. The following students are our winners for the year, running the most laps. These students will receive their medallions at next week assembly. Great efforts from these students.
1st – Owen M (3AB) – 59.7kms
2nd – Travis M (2AA) – 58.2kms
3rd – Amaia S (4AA) and Kora S (4AC) - 54.6kms
Keeping Kids Physically Active Over the School Holidays
As we come to the end of the school year, it is important that we keep our children physically active throughout the school holidays. As it is, only 1 in 5 children aged between 5 and 14 years old reach the recommended total of 60 minutes of physical activity.
The link below is an article published AMazingMinds Psychology where a simple and powerful framework for this is the Healthy Mind Platter, developed by psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr Dan Siege. It identifies seven areas of mental nutrition balancing sleep, physical, focus, play, connecting, time in and down time.
Please have a read as food for thought and giving your child the balance they need.

Have a great festive break. See you in 2026.
