A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Heights Campus

Students in the MLC have had a wonderful few weeks of learning as we have headed towards the end of the year. Their curiosity, resilience, and growing independence have continued to shine, and we are incredibly proud of the progress they have made.

In Reading, students have been revisiting all the comprehension strategies they have learned throughout the year. We have been reflecting on what good readers do, thinking carefully about what we are reading so we can understand the text on a deeper level. Students have been identifying which strategies help them best understand a text, such as visualising, predicting, inferring, summarising, and connecting, and discussing how these strategies support their comprehension across different types of texts.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring division. Students have been using their multiplication knowledge to understand how division works, and they have been introduced to written long-division strategies. There has been a strong emphasis on recognising the relationship between multiplication and division. We are now moving into capacity, where students will engage in hands-on investigations to compare, estimate, and measure liquids using a range of everyday containers. This practical learning is always a highlight and helps students build real-world understanding.

In Writing, students are composing informative letters and writing for a purpose and specific audience. They have been writing letters to their peers explaining what life in the MLC is like, as well as letters to students in the SLC to learn more about what next year may hold. These letters are a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their learning community while also creating pieces that will support their future teachers in getting to know them as learners and individuals.

In Projects, we are wrapping up our Science unit on States of Matter—solids, liquids, and gases. Students have enjoyed hands-on experiments that helped them observe how materials can change under different conditions, such as when heat is added. These investigations have strengthened their understanding of how particles behave in different states and deepened their scientific thinking skills.

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning to recognise behaviours that make them feel unsafe and exploring strategies to get help when needed. They have also been discussing respect, kindness and accepting differences, and how these actions help create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Students have been demonstrating our value behaviours and earning lots of tokens!

As we move into our final weeks together before 2026 arrives, we are reflecting proudly on everything the students have achieved this year. The term has flown by, and we look forward to finishing the year with positivity and plenty of celebration as we recognise each student’s growth.
