Junior School

Junior School Wellbeing Day
On Friday 31 May, our Junior School came together to celebrate Wellbeing Day. The day was filled with activities and events organised by students from all cohorts, providing opportunities for their peers to engage and participate. The enthusiasm and passion displayed by both the event organisers and participants was truly wonderful to see.
The range of events was diverse and captivating, including outdoor games, a scavenger hunt, origami workshops, a bushwalk, mindfulness in drawing sessions, storytelling, chatterboxes focused on expressing gratitude, and even a silent disco... which wasn't so silent! These events not only facilitated interaction and bonding among students and cohorts but also encouraged moments of reflection, presence and gratitude.
Reconciliation Week Excursion
Written by Kate De Abreu (Year 5), Hasini Matcha (Year 5), and Isla Steger (Year 4)
On Friday 31 May a group of students in Years 3–5 had the best day ever! It was so much fun, and we learned a lot too. We went to Langley Park in the city, and guess what? Mr Nic Christie was our bus driver, and he made the ride super fun.
When we got there, we watched an Aboriginal dance group perform. They told stories through their dances. There were three dances about the Willie Willie (tornado), the Weitj (emu), and Djiljit (spearfishing). The dancers were amazing, and we loved watching them!
After that, we learned about dreamtime stories. They used stuffed animals to act them out. The first story was about how the Nyingarn (echidna) got its spikes. The next one was about how the Booyi (long-neck turtle) got its fins, neck, and shell. The last story was about how the Booladarlung (pelican) became so good at catching fish. It was so interesting and fun to listen to these stories.
Then we learned about Fanny Balbuk Yooreel. She was an important woman who protested for Aboriginal land rights around Boorlo (Perth). It was really inspiring learning about her.
Next, we explored the educational zone. There was community dot painting, postcards for our dreams of Reconciliation, and a chill-out zone with lots of beanbags. We also joined the Reconciliation walk. It was all about coming together and sharing stories. Being part of this celebration for Reconciliation Week was amazing, and we had a great time.
Year 3M Chapel Reflections
Last week during Chapel, our class embraced the theme of Reconciliation Week, highlighting its profound significance. We explored the essence of reconciliation, understanding it as a journey of healing, unity and mutual respect. This vital process involves acknowledging past injustices, fostering dialogue and working towards a future where everyone feels valued and included. To complement our reflections, we crafted presentation slides set to meaningful music, creating an engaging and thought-provoking experience for the Chapel audience.
On Friday our focus shifted to Wellbeing, celebrating Wellbeing Day with activities that nurtured our minds, bodies, and spirits. We began by expressing gratitude for the various aspects of our lives that contribute to our overall wellbeing. The day was filled with diverse activities: we engaged in fitness rotations led by the Year 6 leaders, danced our hearts out at a silent disco, enjoyed friendly competition with board games, and practised mindfulness through creative drawings. The culmination of Wellbeing Day was the creation of special pockets for each other, filled with heartfelt messages, drawings and thoughtful little pieces. These pockets served as tokens of appreciation, highlighting what we love and admire about one another, and reinforcing the bonds of our classroom community.
Year 6 Red Cross Incursion
Written by Chloe Wong-Chung-Lung and Shyann Zhang
On Thursday 23 May Year 6S had visitors from the Red Cross, Mark and Julie, come to our class with the goal of helping us understand the difference between refugees and asylum seekers, and what they have to go through when fleeing their country. We were lucky to do a number of activities, such as making a list with things we would like to bring, and people who we would like to save. Then we had to cross two items or people off each list, and the adults in the room then crossed two more items off our list. After that we watched videos on child asylum seekers fleeing from Syria. These activities and videos helped us empathise with the refugees all over the world.
The following week, on Thursday 30 May, we had the opportunity to meet with Solange, who is an asylum seeker from Congo, as well as some visitors from the Red Cross, who helped us to understand what refugees and asylum seekers face when they have to flee their country. Solange had to leave her husband and many of her possessions behind in the process of fleeing, and had to start anew when she came to Australia.
We are very grateful for the opportunity, and we thank Red Cross for helping us understand this topic in depth, as well as Solange for taking the time to come and share her story with us.
