After undertaking Music in Semester 1, 7A, B and C are now undertaking Visual Art for Semester 2. In Year 7, students bring a range of strengths to art class. Some have a strong theoretical understanding, others excel in practical skills, showing impressive technique and creativity. And other students may be new to these ideas and skills but are enthusiastic and ready to learn. This mix of abilities creates a dynamic and engaging environment for everyone to develop their artistic talents, learn how to problem solve, and think creatively.
The first unit of learning in Year 7 Art is about the elements of art, which are the building blocks (some say ingredients) of all the visual arts. Students explore the elements of art in a practical way and are introduced to theoretical components in our curriculum, such as annotation and artwork analysis.
From a student’s perspective - article by Malakai Makira 7B:
So far in Art this semester I have learnt to collage, mix secondary and tertiary colours, used drawing techniques to create different types of tone and textures, such as bricks, and many others. I am currently making my collage. Firstly, I sketched out plants, then painted my paper and added complementary coloured patterns over the top. I am now making the artwork by cutting out my painted pieces of paper, and other papers, then laying it down to finish off my artwork. We also learnt about the history of colours like where they have come from, how they make it and its origin. We also painted the colour wheel and learnt about each colour like purple, green, blue and all the relationships of each one. I have really enjoyed art this semester and am looking forward to what's next.
