Year 6 Spotlight

Our Year 6 students have commenced work on the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Exhibition. This culminating learning experience marks the pinnacle of their primary education, showcasing their growth, understanding, and inquiry skills developed over their Primary School years.

The focus of this year's Exhibition is the consumer system. Over the last few weeks, students have engaged in a series of learning experiences designed to deepen their understanding of the various elements within the consumer system. Through this exploration, they have begun to identify potential problems and areas for improvement.

The central idea guiding the 2024 Exhibition is: "We understand consumer power and the consumer system, allowing us to make informed decisions. By recognising our influence, we can use this power to create positive changes in the world around us." This central idea empowers our students to think critically about their roles as consumers and their potential to drive positive change.

A highlight of their learning occurred last week when the Year 6 students visited the Yakult factory. This excursion provided them with a firsthand look at the manufacturing, transport, and packaging processes of Yakult bottles. Students examined how the product is distributed across Australia and New Zealand, gaining valuable insights into the complexities of product distribution.

Currently, our Year 6 students are engaging with different issues arising from the production of various brands and products. These discussions and inquiries are guiding them towards selecting a specific topic to focus on for their Exhibition. By early Term 3, each student will have chosen their area of inquiry, setting the stage for their in-depth investigation and presentation.

Throughout the PYP Exhibition, students are applying their strong comprehension and analytical skills through researching the many aspects of their issue coming from the consumer system. They continue to use the 6+1 Traits of Writing to enhance their persuasive writing skills and the four proficiencies of mathematics to give meaning to the many data sets that they will encounter. This truly transdisciplinary approach to learning ensures that our students integrate knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines, fostering a comprehensive understanding of their chosen topics.

The Exhibition will culminate in a whole school community open afternoon in Term 3. We warmly welcome everyone from the Caulfield Primary School community, both past and present, to join us in celebrating our students' achievements and growth. This event will be a testament to the hard work, dedication, and creativity of our Year 6 students as they present their inquiries and share their insights with the community. More information about this will be provided in early Term 3.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students and their commitment to this learning experience. The IB PYP Exhibition is not only a demonstration of their academic abilities but also a reflection of their growth as thoughtful, engaged, and responsible Global Citizens.
