OTHER SCHOOL NEWS

Vera Dudas

Multicultural Community Liaison Officer

I am delighted to inform our Multicultural Committee members and the broader community about an exciting event: The Multicultural Fashion Exhibition – TAMADUNI.

This exhibition which opened on Thursday June 6, and will run until Thursday July 6, 2024, is a must-see at the Geelong Regional Libraries, located at 51 Little Malop Street, Geelong.

This unique showcase is presented to us by our esteemed MC Community Member and NGSC parent, Catherine Jonathan. Catherine is the founder of Regional Runways Inc., a community association that showcases the talents of emerging fashion designers from culturally diverse migrant and refugee backgrounds.

Several staff members and I had the pleasure of attending the opening of this Multicultural Fashion Exhibition. The event features exquisite works from local designers and artisans representing First Nations, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Africa. We had the privilege of enjoying an evening filled with fashion, food, live music, and a panel discussion led by prominent speakers, all while exploring contemporary interpretations of traditional cultures.

I strongly recommend visiting the Geelong Regional Library to experience this display of emerging talent before it concludes on Thursday, July 6.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Catherine for her generous invitation and for providing such a profound cultural experience at the opening of the TAMADUNI exhibition!

During our fourth and final Multicultural Committee (MC) meeting for term two, held on Monday, June 3, from 12:45 pm to 1:30 pm, we engaged in meaningful discussions about forthcoming events such as Refugee Week, with activities planned for each lunchtime. We also brainstormed ideas for the Multicultural Festival set for October 25, including themes and activities. Exciting innovations are forthcoming, so please stay tuned for more updates or join us at our next term’s meeting.

Please mark your calendars for our next meeting on Monday, July 22 during lunchtime (12:45 pm - 1:30 pm) in the Conference Room.

Connecting Across Cultures

On Wednesday 29th of May, our Year 9 Japanese class connected with a Year 8 class in Toyo Junior High School via Zoom. Toyo Junior High School is one of NGSC’s Sister Schools in Izumiotsu City, Osaka, Japan. Our students had the opportunity to practise their Japanese with the Toyo JHS students, and we provided the Toyo students a chance to practise their English with us. Everyone had a lot of fun and really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about each other’s interests and lives. Our students connected over shared interests and likes, and we are looking forward to our next opportunity to virtually meet with Izumiotsu students. We would like to offer thanks to the staff and students of Toyo JHS for this great experience. またね! [mata ne] (See you again soon).

*REMINDER*

Students with conditions such as asthma, allergies, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and seizures are required to visit their general practitioner (GP) annually for the renewal of their medical plans. The school is currently awaiting the submission of many students' medical plans. Your prompt attention and cooperation in providing these documents are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
