Mary MacKillop Feast Day!!
Today, we celebrated the Australian Patron saint of our school, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Over the last week, students have been learning about Saint Mary MacKillop and how she is an example of someone who showed courage, kindness, compassion and humility towards others and trust in God.
As part of our feast day celebrations, we ran our Mary MacKillop art competition. We received many entries and would like to extend our thanks to all students for their creativity in designing an artwork of Mary.
Whole School Liturgy
This morning, we started our celebrations with a liturgy. What a wonderful opportunity it was for us to come together as a school community. With nearly 650 people in our Sacred Space, our students were proud and present, displaying a strong sense of respect and reverence, as we reflected on Saint Mary MacKillop.
One of the main lessons taken from today's liturgy, is a reflection on God’s love for us and then of our call to show love for one another. We’re called to show compassion for those in need. This is what Mary MacKillop devoted her life to.
She had a strong sense of God’s love for her and she was wonderful in showing love and compassion for people in need. She was constantly looking for ways to help others. One of her sayings was, “Never see a need without doing something about it.” Mary MacKillop devoted herself to teaching children and caring for families, particularly families in great need. I thank God for the example that Mary MacKillop has given in showing compassion and kindness and I pray that we might follow in her footsteps in the compassion and kindness that we show.
The Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven
Next Thursday, we celebrate another very important Mary in our lives. The Assumption of Mary, Jesus' mother.
The Assumption signals the end of Mary's earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. This is one of the Holiest days of the Catholic Church. It is a day of ‘Obligation’. This means it must be recognised and celebrated on the day it falls on.
Our students will celebrate with a small liturgy within their homegroups throughout the day.
Parish Mass:
Just a reminder, we don't have a Parish mass tomorrow, as we celebrated as a whole school today for Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day.
Next Friday 16th August, we also will not be having our Friday parish mass, as we are having a pupil free day, as the staff of SMCM come together for a day of faith formation.
