Student Achievements

Congratulations to Year 11 student Phoebe Smith who has been selected in the SA Girls U18 Touch Football Team for the National Championships in Coffs Harbour from 25th to 28th September 2024. We wish Phoebe the best of luck and hope she has a wonderful experience representing South Australia.

Chelsea Johnson (Year 9) recently won the State Championships in the Level 7 category of the Aerobic Gymnastics Championships and has been selected as part of the state team that will travel to the Gold Coast for the National Australian Gymnastics Championships. Congratulations Chelsea!

Well done to Zoe James who has been selected in the U18 State Hockey Squad!

To make a state team is a huge accomplishment - we congratulate our students on this amazing achievement, and we wish them all the best with their preparations and during the carnival.

It is lovely to celebrate each other’s achievements so please let me know if your daughter has achieved highly in a sport, such as making a state team, as I would love to be able to share these successes with the College community.

Good luck to LC Stars, LC Groove, LC Disco and LC Electric!

Thank You, Hazel

One of our Year 6 students, Hazel Gavenlock, is a keen footballer but has not been able to play herself this winter due to previous concussions. Hazel has kept up her involvement in the game however by helping to coach our Year 3/4 team on Wednesday afternoons. Most of our players are brand new to the game and it has been great to have some extra support as they begin their football journey. Their skill level has improved each week and they are having a lot of fun.

Thank you, Hazel for your commitment to the school!

SAPSASA Netball

Good luck to Alyssa, Elsa-Marie and Giselle who are representing East Adelaide this week in the State Netball Championships.

Resilience

Our Year 6 White team had to tough things out last week. Camilla had started the game brilliantly in the midcourt and we were away to an early lead, however a nasty fall saw her crash to the deck face-first.

It was a scary moment but fortunately after a short while Camilla managed to pick herself up and walk off the court. A trip to the medical centre was needed though. The game must go on and the team had to soldier on with six players. They fought every inch of the way and managed to hang on. Winners by 5! A quick team photo was sent through post-game to boost Camilla’s spirits.

We hope it is a quick recovery, Camilla!

An early heads up… Year 2 Netball

Our Year 2s have been biding their time, patiently watching the older students and in some cases older sisters strut their stuff out on the netball court.

In Term 4 our Year 2s will finally be unleashed!

Our Year 2s will have the chance to play summer netball for the school in Term 4. We play in the Eastern Districts Netball Association’s Friday night competition. Matches will start in Term 4 with the summer season running into Term 1 2025. The Year 2s play under the “Netta” introductory rules with lower rings and smaller netballs.

Registrations to play will open mid-way through Term 3 with some ‘preseason’ trainings held in late September. During the season the times will be:

  • Trainings on Monday afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm in the Loreto gym
  • Matches on Friday evenings, 5:30pm start at venues in the eastern suburbs

If there are any parents who would be interested in coaching, please contact Ben Johnswood at Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

Tennis Coaching in Term 3

The Todd Perry Tennis Academy will be offering tennis coaching sessions at Loreto in Term 3. Sessions are available for all junior school age groups:

  • Reception to Year 3: Wednesday afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm in the Loreto gym
  • Year 4 to Year 6: Friday lunchtimes, 1:10-2:00pm on the Loreto junior school courts

Please click here to register for the Term 3 program.

Soccer Goal Blitz

Our Year 3/4 soccer teams have been piling on the goals this winter. The Year 3/4 Gold team had a big win on Friday, 12-0 over Pulteney. Summer scored 4 goals while it was great to see three of our players – Eva, Harper and Colette – score their first goals of the season. Meanwhile the Year 3 Blue team hung on for a tense 2-1 win at Westminster. They are one win away from an undefeated term!

Qué Será, Será

Our Year 3 hockey team has had a tough introduction to the sport this term, coming up against much bigger, older and more experienced opposition most weeks. They have worked hard, and it has been great to see them improve under Fenella’s coaching.

They had a breakthrough last Friday against Pembroke Year 4s with the team scoring their first ever goal! Vera Hutchins clinically tucking one away into the bottom corner.

Let the floodgates open!

Spirit of the game

School sport is usually a fantastic, wholly positive experience but occasionally our teams will come across others who are not playing in the spirit of the game or showing respect to officials.

Our Year 5 basketballers experienced that recently.

When there is poor behaviour from one team it’s natural for the other team to feel that they have to match it in order to compete. Standards can deteriorate quickly, and it takes strong leadership and character to rise above.

What was pleasing about our basketball team was the maturity with which our players, parents and young coach Caitlin (Year 11) handled the situation.

Caitlin encouraged our girls to stay on task and not to worry about what was happening on the opposition sideline. We didn’t allow ourselves to be dragged down to their level. We didn’t dispute decisions. We continued to share the ball around, we worked hard on defence, we encouraged each other. We played our game – “Control what we can control” Caitlin instructed our players. We didn’t retaliate to the numerous fouls the opposition were committing. We shook hands afterwards and congratulated the other team.

Sport is always full of challenging moments, close games, controversial decisions, rough play etc. While playing sport you will experience the full gamut of emotions. It’s why we love it but there will be moments that challenge our behaviour. Coaches and parents play a key role in demonstrating how our young players should react to the challenges sport throws up. Children copy what they see!

Having a coach who is able to set a positive example and to remain calm in a tense environment is crucial. Loreto should be so proud that it is producing young women with the strength of character Caitlin showed. When our young players are faced with a challenging situation again, we know they will react positively because they have been shown how to.

We ended up losing a hard-fought game by 2 points. However, being able to walk off the court proud of the effort we put in and the manner in which we played whilst representing Loreto is invaluable. It captures pretty much every Mary Ward value - certainly worth a lot more than 2 points!

Well done, Caitlin, players and parents!
