English

Reading and Viewing

This term we will be integrating our Inquiry unit during our Literacy block. Students will explore a variety of reading techniques to comprehend texts in different ways. Students will work with their teacher to develop an understanding of their reading capabilities and create reading goals. In particular, texts viewed will support the building of new vocabulary, concepts and different points of view about events from different groups.

 

Writing

This term students will focus on learning to write their own narrative and a persuasive text.   Students will also develop their skills in stating opinions and supporting them with evidence during a level debate session. 

 

A debate is a formal discussion where opposing arguments are presented and decisions are made via voting. 

 

Speaking and Listening

To support students in developing their capacity to speak confidently and with expression, they will be provided opportunities to investigate and compose a spoken text. There will be opportunities to engage and record sustained conversations and discussions using content integrated from Wellbeing and Inquiry lessons.

Maths

Number and Algebra

This term, students will learn about place value, addition and subtraction, deepening their understanding of these topics. Students will be working with whole numbers to build fluency and recognition.  Students will investigate strategies involving: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, with and without technology.

 

Measurement and Geometry

We will be exploring the practical application of timetables to plan a trip or set daily activities. We will be investigating mathematical skills such as measurement of time to develop critical thinking.

 

Statistics and Probability

In learning about Statistics and Probability, students will be provided with the opportunity to explore relationships between Mathematics and other areas of the curriculum. Students will use interactive data samples based on historical studies of Australia’s demography, human population and reconcile events related to our government and election process. 

Inquiry

This term the children will be learning about ‘Government’. The students will investigate how Australia became a nation through Federation,  how people are elected to govern a country, how laws are made, and the roles and responsibilities of the three levels of government.

 

Religion

During the term, students will make regular time to pray daily. Each student will be provided a rotating opportunity to lead the level in daily prayer. We will have opportunities to explore and interpret spiritual wellbeing in the light of our Catholic faith and our community. Students will explain the nature of the Holy Spirit and its particular role in the Catholic Church 

 

They will identify and interpret the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how these enable people to contribute to the mission of the church and community.

Stretch

Stretch runs for approximately 1 hour a week and involves students completing activities related to the Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical and  Personal and Social Capabilities. During Term 1, the focus for Stretch is Growth Mindset. Students will differentiate between a growth and fixed mindset, study the parts of the brain, develop their ‘learning grit’, explore the power of ‘Yet’, and understand that mistakes are part of the learning journey. Activities completed in Stretch include escape rooms, group and individual activities and games, research tasks and constructing models.    

Social & Emotional Wellbeing

This term we will investigate Emotional Literacy. The students will investigate elements of Emotional Literacy. This  involves having self-awareness and recognition of their own feelings and knowing how to manage them, such as the ability to stay calm when they  feel angry or to reassure themselves when in doubt. It includes empathy and having sensitivity to the feelings of others.

 

Students will be given an opportunity to reflect on their wellbeing daily through prayer and practising mindfulness.  Students will also participate in well being focussed lessons which will assist them in explaining how emotional responses influence behaviour and their potential effect on relationships and learning.
