Get Technical Behind the Curtain of Moulin Rouge!

Late last year, a group of our students attended a one-off careers event focussed on the technical aspects of putting on a professional show. The event was hosted by the producers of Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Regent Theatre in Collins Street. Staged in the heart of the theatre precinct of Melbourne at the majestic Regent Theatre, which was built in 1929 and has stood the test of time considering the many changes of the city’s landscape and survived the wrecker’s ball in the 1970’s. Thankfully the next generation have the opportunity to experience the ambiance and be absorbed in international and national productions. This event was no exception and for some of the students who attended the careers excursion, this was the very first time of going to a theatre, let alone an extravagance of this production. The students gained a rare insight into technical and behind the scenes elements of a major global production like Moulin Rouge, accompanied by the amazing talents of the some of the cast and crew providing a window that is rarely seen. This event commenced with a short performance from Moulin Rouge! The Musical cast and crew which set the scene for and introduced the various technical departments in putting a production together. The crew spoke of the different elements of production highlighting their career pathway journeys into this field, being academic, vocational, trade and personal passion. The industry is still recovering from the impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and career opportunities are continuing to be on the rise for students to be employed and to forge a path in this exciting and challenging career. The students also had the opportunity to meet with tertiary representatives from NIDA (National Institute for Dramatic Art), WAPPA (Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts), Federation University, University of Melbourne, Melbourne Polytechnic to discuss courses they offer in stage management, production, performance, costume, make-up, hair, lighting, fashion, prop making just to mention a few.

The Coburg High Drama and Production groups had an amazing day at the Moulin Rouge Technical. Whilst there we all learned quite a bit about the wide range of careers we could pursue in behind-the-stage work, as well as the many important jobs that help to create a cohesive play. We all enjoyed this rare opportunity to see a Professional play &  inner workings and thank the School and the people at Get Technical for the Opportunity.

Library

Welcome to another year at CHS Library and what a start we have had! We have hit the ground running with the first of several events for the year with our very romantic Blind Date With a Book. Students poured into the library hoping to find their new book love. While some found true book love, others weren’t as lucky. Better luck next year.

Yet again our two illustrious Library Assistants to the librarian, Althea and Justice, were a powerhouse team helping students during the event. Thanks heaps you two, you are the best!

Our next event will be the first Library Trivia Master for the year. Be ready…..

Science Gallery

On February 20, Coburg High School was invited to the opening of the new exhibition at the Science Gallery called Not Natural . Three Year 8 students were selected to attend the evening which was opened by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Ben Carroll. Students engaged in a workshop with the facilitators of the STEM Centre of Excellence, following exploration of the exhibition and a chat with the Minister.

As part of the Merri-bek education plan, CHS are fortunate to continue the partnership with the STEM Centre of Excellence in providing a range of inquiry based STEM workshops for students.
