Learning and Teaching

Learning Space One Juniors

We have had a busy week in Learning space one Juniors. We made lots of new friends and met our lovely teachers and peers. The Preps in our learning space have settled in so well and have made our learning space a very fun and happy place.

Natasha’s home group had the best day playing different games and reading stories. The children loved learning all about tally marks with Natasha and finding information out about their new friends in clinic 3 .

Laurelle’s homegroup had so much fun playing different games. The parachute was their absolute favourite. They were so excited they didn’t want to stop playing.  Clinic 2 maths have learnt about tally marks and found out that the boys and girls in clinic 2 loved squishmallows.

Aoife and Melissas’ homegroup when on a ‘choo choo train tour’ around the school, we pretended we were on a train and used the different locations around the school as the train station stops. It was so much fun. We even stopped in for a quick visit to Christines office,

The Preps had their very first day of school on Wednesday and the grade ones and twos did an amazing job helping them to get organised and to feel welcome

All the LS! Juniors got together to participate in the Stomp dance incursion. It was terrific. Every child danced and laughed throughout the whole session. It was beautiful to see the joy and positive energy in the room.

Learning Space One Seniors

Learning Space One Seniors: here we are playing a game called ‘scattergories’. Students were given one minute to respond to a given prompt as many answers as possible. They then compared these with their peers. We were able to compare who had similar thoughts and hear each others opinions.

We have all loved settling into our new Home Groups. It has been wonderful to spend time getting to know each other through different games and learning opportunities. The students have all shown their eagerness to learn and understand the routines as well as setting the expectations for our learning space. Looking forward to a term filled with learning, laughter and most importantly moments to grow!

LS2 Seniors - SWELL WEEK

It's been an exciting start for our seniors this week as they dove into the new school year with enthusiasm. They've been busy getting to know each other, forming connections with teachers, and exploring the wonderful theme for this year: "In the Light of Christ." In our discussions, we discovered the beautiful metaphor of each student being a unique light that shines.

It's like each child has their own special glow that adds brightness to our LS2 community. We took a moment to reflect on those times when Jesus has been a guiding light in our lives, making the theme even more personal and meaningful.

To make this concept even more fun and relatable, we drew parallels to lighthouses. You know, those towering structures that guide ships safely through stormy seas? We explored how they are like beacons of light, brightening the pathways and ensuring safe journeys. Here's the really cool part: the seniors decided on a creative project to visually represent their uniqueness! Each one is decorating a hand that symbolizes who they are and how they plan to shine their light in LS2 throughout the year. Picture a display showcasing a gallery of these uniquely adorned hands, each telling a story of your child's individuality and aspirations.

Get ready to be amazed, parents! It's not just about the light; it's about the creativity, personality, and promise that each hand represents. We can't wait for you to see the wonderful ways your seniors are planning to shine in LS2 this year!

Learning Space Two Juniors

Learning Space 3 Juniors

WELCOME TO LS3 JUNIORS!

We welcomed our Year Ones and Year Twos back to the school year for 2024 on Tuesday.

On Thursday we welcomed our Foundation students for the very first time to school.

Our Learning Journey has already started and we are learning how to work together with our new friends. Here are a few highlights of SWELL week!

We also had a wonderful ‘Stomp’ Dance incursion today and practised our cool moves to the song ‘Work Up’!

Learning Space 3 Seniors

In this SWELL week in LS3 Seniors we have reverently participated in a prayer session responding to, the Mission statement of ‘In the light of Christ’ we created our messages of how Jesus can be our light on rocks and created the foundation of our lighthouse. The symbol of the ‘Lighthouse’ will be an important image we will use throughout this year to connect with how Jesus guides us in all we do and is our beacon of grace, showing us the path to God regardless of our choices.

We have also been creating our unique Home Group prayer mats, allowing students to take creative freedom to share what makes them unique. The students have been eagerly contributing their own design to their home group’s prayer mat. These will be used during our morning gathering celebrations and creates a sense of belonging and a safe space for students.

Italian

Buongiorno! Ben venuti a tutti.

Juniors began Italian with simple phrases and sentences. Scusi (excuse me). Posso andare al bagno? (may I go to the bathroom?)

Introducing themselves. Mi chiamo (insert name).

Mi piace (I like) What do you like to eat and do?

Some groups listened to a story about a family, some about Pop, the multicoloured dinosaur.

A great start to 2024!

Ciao,

Filomena

Choir News

Choir this year will be lead by Nicole our new Music/Dance teacher and Rachel. Some other staff will assist with the choir. We have decided that we will not take new choir members from Year 3 yet but that they will have a chance to join the choir later in the year.

We will also give an opportunity for students in Years 4 to 6 who are not in the choir but would like to join, a chance to join the choir. We are going to ask parents of children who would like to join the choir to complete an enrolment form.

The reason for this, is because it is a commitment to come to weekly practices as well as parents being willing to bring their children to different events throughout the year to participate whether they be at school or the wider community.

Nicole and myself (Rachel) met with the current choir members on Thursday to talk to them about what we will be doing this year and the commitment we will be asking for. Choir will run on Thursday lunchtimes and we will at times have additional practices on Tuesday lunchtimes, particularly in the lead up to school masses and Sacraments.

If you need to purchase a new choir top, please speak with Nicole who can help you with this. We are very excited about working with the choir this year and look forward to hearing them perform. We are also looking at more opportunities for the choir to perform at school assemblies on Fridays and to singer for the wider school community. If you have any questions about the Senior choir, please come and speak with myself or Nicole.

Thanks

Rachel

SPORTS NEWS

Welcome back to Term 1, 2024! We have lots of exciting sport programs organised this term for both Juniors and Seniors.

SENIOR SPORTS

FRIDAY SPORTS

Grade 5/6 will be involved in Interschool Sports starting March. When they are not involved in a match, they will be training with their coaches. The summer sports are: soccer, teeball, netball, volley stars and cricket. Grade 3/4 students will get a chance to try each of the sports above so that they are familiar with them once they are involved in interschool sports in Grade 5/6.

NETBALL CLINICS

Casey Netball will be providing free netball clinics for our Grade 3/4 students in Week 3 while the Grade 5/6 students are on camp. We hope the Grade 3/4 students enjoy the clinics and some might even discover that this is a sport they might want to take up out of school hours.

Further information will be provided to parents via Operoo as we get closer. If students are interested in doing netball out of school hours, there will be a flyer in the Community section of the newsletter.

GRADE 6 BIKE EDUCATION

In Week 4 our Grade 6s will begin their 2nd level of Bike Education: Pathways. They will begin on the school grounds recapping the skills learnt last year. For the remainder of the sessions they will be using the skills they have learnt, riding on pathways in the community. Further information will be provided via Operoo for parents.

We will also be looking for some parent helpers to ride with the students once they begin the pathways program. To assist you must have a current Working with Children Check registered with the school office. If you are able to ride a bike and assist between 11.35-1.30 on the following days: Friday March 1st, Friday March 8th, Friday March 15th and Friday March 22nd, please contact me at gfaiola@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

DIVISIONAL SWIMMING

Divisional Swimming will take place on in Week 7 on Tuesday March 12th. We did not have the District Swimming Competition this year to determine students that would qualify for Divisional Swimming but luckily Casey Race was able to identify possible candidates for us last year during swimming lessons. These students will be nominated to the District with their swimming times and if they are the fastest out of the District nominations they will attend Divisional Swimming.
