Who Am I?

My name is Cate Doherty and I am the Literacy Learning Specialist here, at Brunswick South. I also teach in Foundation two days a week. In my role as Literacy Learning Specialist, I support teachers to ensure that we are meeting the literacy needs of all our students. My role includes:

• Working closely with teachers to improve classroom practice
• Supporting structured phonics instruction
• Helping teachers with their planning of reading and writing units
• Assessing, supporting and monitoring students who may need additional literacy support 
• Delivering professional learning around all things literacy to our staff, ensuring all students benefit from consistent, evidence based teaching.
• Working together with Chiara, the Bilingual Pedagogy Leader, to make connections between the two languages used to teach at our school

Why I Love My Role?

I am passionate about literacy and supporting our students to become engaged speakers,  readers and writers. Strong literacy skills are essential for success across all learning areas and I am committed to working with our staff to support all students to become capable and literate individuals. 

I love watching students develop self confidence and grow as readers and writers. At Brunswick South we celebrate individual growth in literacy. We value the role that families play in supporting literacy at home. Throughout the year, I will send home ideas of how to further support your child on the literacy journey.
