Numeracy

Hi! My name is Sarah, and I am the Numeracy Learning Specialist from Monday to Wednesday, and the upstairs English teacher on Thursday and Friday this year.

Over the past two weeks in Mathematics, teachers and students have been working towards a common learning goal: “We are learning to be positive and resilient mathematicians.” It has been wonderful listening to our students’ feedback and hearing how they feel while engaging in the mathematics classroom. Please see some of what they shared with me below.

“My favourite part of Maths so far was organising my book. I could make it all look neat to help me solve problems and read it better. My teachers have been giving us more challenging work. When the work is challenging, I know I can use tools in the room and get help from friends or the teacher.”– Henrietta (Year 5)

“It was fun problem solving in Maths last week while working through the number maze. I felt challenged. I feel like when people challenge me, I get excited. When I push myself, I get to know myself better.”– Marta (Year 5)

“I liked doing the Maths Maze because I could work as a team. Sometimes when I need to problem solve alone, it feels hard. We practised using tools like ‘3 Before Me’ and the ‘Getting Started’ walls.”– Anna (Year 5)

“Maths during Learning to Learn was good because I could get to know other people in my class. When we made our birthday cupcakes, it was good to know about each other’s birthdays so we know one another better. When I added all the digits in my birthday together, Violette and I made the biggest numbers (but that doesn’t mean we are the oldest!). Lucky for me, I’m not born on the 29th of February because that is a leap year. I usually get really interested in Maths like this because I try to find out what month my classmates are born in.”– Hippolyte (Year 4)

If there’s one thing that’s for sure, our kids love a challenge and enjoy connecting with their peers and teachers. If you are interested in solving the number maze yourself, you can find the problem HERE.

I hope you have all had a positive start to the year!
