Principal Team Update

Dear Beaumaris Primary Parents and Carers,
Term 1 is well and truly underway! As the Principal Team visits the classrooms, it is wonderful to witness the hum of engagement and learning across the school. It has been especially pleasing to see how quickly our Prep students are taking to Reading and Writing. They have embraced classroom routines and are already demonstrating strong growth.
This term, our school is beginning to implement the Number Fluency Program, where all students will engage in 15 minutes of daily fact fluency practice. This initiative is designed to build automaticity in recalling and applying mathematical facts, strengthening students’ confidence and accuracy in Mathematics.
School Camps
Our Year 5 students attended their camp at Sovereign Hill, where they were immersed in life on the 1850s Victorian goldfields. Experiencing the era’s expectation that children were “seen and not heard,” students participated in immersive classroom programs centred on the themes of Repetition and Discipline! Through this hands-on experience, students gained insight into what schooling and daily life were like for children during the gold rush, deepening their historical understanding in a meaningful and memorable way.
Thank you to our parent volunteers and staff who embraced the spirit of the experience by dressing in period costume and generously giving their time to ensure a successful and enjoyable camp. Without your support, we would not be able to provide such a rich and memorable opportunity for our students.
Our Year 6 students attended camp at Peninsula Outdoors Camp, providing a valuable opportunity for personal growth, resilience, and building stronger connections as they begin their final year of primary school. The camp experience supports the strengthening peer relationships while building resilience through new and challenging activities including surfing and snorkelling. The students fully embraced the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, encouraging and supporting one another along the way.
As with the Year 5 camp, we would like to sincerely thank our parent volunteers and staff for generously giving their time and energy to ensure our students had a successful, safe, and enjoyable camp experience.
Investiture Assembly and Student Leadership
On 10 February, we were delighted to welcome back Jenson and Erin, our 2020 School Captains. It was inspiring to hear how their time at Beaumaris Primary School helped equip them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities that have contributed to their ongoing success.
Our current School Captains and Vice Captains - Paxton, Indi, Harriet, and Harry - also shared their vision and plans for BPS. This Leadership Assembly is a proud and important part of our student leadership program, celebrating both legacy and future direction.
Last Tuesday, our student leaders came together for a working lunch in the concourse, focusing on their leadership development and beginning to plan key initiatives and events for the year ahead.
Attendance
In line with the Department of Education’s focus on Attendance Improvement, notices are sent home when a child has missed more than five days without explanation. Over the past four years, our school’s attendance has generally declined, largely due to family holidays.
The start of 2026, however, has been very positive for Beaumaris Primary School, with a significant reduction in absences compared to State data. This is a welcome improvement, as historically our attendance has been well above the State average—a trend we are actively working to reduce to ensure consistent student learning.
You Tell Us, Specialist Information and Teaching, Learning and Wellbeing Information Evening.
We would like to thank all families and staff for making the You-Tell-Us and Specialist Information evenings a success. Feedback from both parents and staff highlighted that the You-Tell-Us interviews provide a strong foundation to support student success.
During these evenings, our Specialists ran information sessions about their programs, which were very well received by attending families. We also extend our thanks to the intimate group who attended the Teaching, Learning, and Wellbeing Information Evening. It was a valuable opportunity to share and showcase BPS’s approach to teaching and wellbeing and the positive impact on our students’ outcomes.
Family Fun Night
Thank you to all the families who attended Family Fun Night. It was a huge success and a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, enjoy games, and connect with one another. The artwork created by our students and community members will be completed and displayed outside the Art Room for everyone to enjoy.
Engagement in the Japanese games and activities was outstanding, further demonstrating why BPS is known for its exceptional Japanese Language program. Thank you to our wonderful staff, especially our specialist team, for organising the evening.
School Council update
Following the recent School Council election process, I would like to thank all parents who nominated. As all positions were filled, an election was not required. On behalf of the Beaumaris Primary School, School Council, I warmly welcome our new members: Andrew King, David Gale, and David Stuart. They join existing members Steve Marshall, Lara Schendzielorz, Andria Savva, Crystal Cartwright, Grace Hulls, Catherine Lamb, and Kartina Hartley.
I would also like to extend our sincere thanks to James Hogarth for his service as School Council Treasurer. James brought significant knowledge, insight, and perspective to the role, and we greatly appreciate his time, commitment, and dedication to the ongoing improvement of BPS.
Buildings and Grounds update
Last week and yesterday, the foundations for the new waterproof shade structure outside the hall were poured. To minimise disruption in the yard, the structural works have been temporarily delayed while drainage works are completed around the SALC.
Meanwhile, the new Japanese garden has been completed, finalising the refreshed Japanese classroom space. We acknowledge that these projects have taken longer than originally planned; however, as they are funded by the State Government rather than the school, multiple stakeholders must be consulted throughout the process.
Swimming
Our Year 1, Year 2, and Year 4 students have engaged in a two-week intensive swimming program at Sandringham Leisure Centre. Feedback from both students and staff has been highly positive, with the students showing growth in their swimming skill development and water safety awareness.
We sincerely thank all of our parent helpers; without your support, this program would not be possible.
Easter Bonnet Parade
This year, our Year 6 students will join our Prep students for the Easter Bonnet Parade, both at school and around the Concourse. This is a special opportunity for our Year 6s to participate in a tradition they missed during their Prep year in 2020 due to COVID lockdowns. We look forward to seeing our Year 6 students parading alongside their buddies in an event that is sure to be memorable for both year levels!
Have a wonderful week.
David, Grace, Keli and the BPS Team
