Core Literacy Skills, Applied Literacy

Once again this year, we will dedicate one hour each day of our literacy block to Core Literacy Skills. During these sessions, students will engage in targeted activities designed to strengthen essential literacy foundations.

In Grade 3, students will participate in tasks focusing on Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Morphology and Etymology (understanding word meanings), Paired Fluency, and handwriting practice.

In Grade 4, students will take part in activities centred on Paired Fluency, handwriting practice, Morphology and Etymology (understanding word meanings), and Vocabulary development.

These activities are designed to support students in building strong reading, writing, and language comprehension skills.

This term, Grade 3 students will delve into the world of Roald Dahl as they read Matilda as their class serial text. Alongside building their vocabulary and understanding of the novel, students will further develop their comprehension skills. In Writing sessions, students will focus on sentence structure, as well as creating narrative and persuasive texts.

This term, Grade 4 students will embark on an adventurous journey across the globe through their class novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. As they follow Michael’s experiences, students will explore deeper layers of meaning within the text and strengthen their comprehension skills. In writing sessions, the focus will be on refining sentence structure and producing both narrative and informational texts.
