Wellbeing and Inclusion

We are pleased to welcome Mrs Sharon Cartledge to Lucas Primary School in the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL).

The role of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader is to build the capability of the whole school with regard to mental health and wellbeing (identification, promotion and prevention), provide support to staff to better identify and support students with mental health needs, establish clear pathways for referral for students requiring assessment and intervention, and monitor and evaluate student progress. Sharon brings a strong passion for supporting student wellbeing and working closely with families and staff to create inclusive, supportive learning environments. She will be working with students, families and staff to strengthen wellbeing supports across our school, and we look forward to the positive contribution she will make to our Lucas Primary School community.

As we begin the school year at Lucas Primary School, we recognise that starting fresh can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. Our focus is on ensuring every student feels safe, included and supported as they settle into new routines, friendships and learning spaces.  To help students feel confident and connected, our teachers have spent the past weeks spending time getting to know each child’s strengths, interests, and learning needs.  We are discussing our shared School Values, ExcellenceRespect, and Responsibility and Growth in all areas of school life and participating in Welcome Circles at the start of everyday so every student feels part of our school classrooms and community.

As your child settles into the coming weeks of Term 1, here are some helpful ways you can support their Wellbeing, and Independence:

  • Check in with your child: Ask about their day, friends, and any challenges they might be facing.
  • Reinforce routines: Encourage consistent bedtimes and morning habits to build stability.
  • Stay organised: Keep track of communication from our school through Compass and Newsletters for any upcoming events or activities.
  • Support independence: Let your child manage their own lunch, bag, and belongings as much as possible.
  • Encourage social connections: Suggest ways for your child to make new friends and be inclusive with others.
  • Celebrate small successes: Praise effort, resilience, and positive choices as routines become established.
  • Maintain open communication: Come along to your child’s Meet and Greet meeting this Tuesday afternoon, bookings via Compass.

If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, we warmly invite you to contact the school and speak with a member of our Wellbeing Team. We’re here to support you and your child.  Here are some wonderful back-to-school books you can share with your child to help them feel excited, confident and ready for the new year.
